I also found WD's scan too slow (and not very effective), so I've been using Zemana AntiMalware (free), which I find delivers much faster and far more effective scans. Some members say ZAM produces too many FPs but that has not been my experience at all.

    Cheers,
    Wendi

    PS. Get well jmonge!

You can't get much better than those 2 IMO. With EEK you only need to keep the architechure build that matches that of your system (unpack it manually), so It's around 350 MB. Really, that's nothing today.
Also, bigger size can mean low compression for sigs, so they are accessed faster, and EEK is blazingly fast. It is also optimally effective on all my 4 cores as it utilizes them to the max.
So the size may be directly related to speed.

EDIT: Another thing to note with EEK is that it will install a driver for a rootkit scan by default (when you open the portable excutable). So if you remove EEK, you'd have to uninstall/remove the .sys driver manually.

Right! Forgot about Zemana, thank you, Wendi, for reminding me. :thumb:

Seer, GT500 at Emsisoft, did tell me once that half the bulk of the Kit is for 32 bit systems. Even if that's changed over the past one year, 350 MB is still too much bulk for me. In contrast, the download for Norton is only 9 MB. ADW is 7 or so. I got into this discussion when I was trying out the commandline scanner. That scan in particular, yes, it's quite fast. :thumb: Here is the post on Emsi forum from back then, I learned a bit there.

    Here's what he says -
So yes, both architechures get downloaded when there is an update to the app itself. Not when you download the update to signatures.
And yes, may redownload it, as I'm not sure about that either. But you can always delete the architechture you don't need and run the app directly from either the x86 or x64 folder.
I've been using it like that for years, though I admit that I don't keep the app on disk but instead download it each time I want to run a scan. ***
That's why I'm not sure about the update.
As for the driver, it's not loaded on system startup, but if you ran the app and didn't reboot, it stays loaded.

EDIT: ***I then unpack it manually using WinRAR and extract only the needed arcitecture

Out of 360 MB EEK takes on disk, 290 belongs to the sigs.
So, note what I wrote here -
It'a a kind of trade off.

I had to remove Sphinx' Windows 10 Firewall Control. I used their Plus version for free for almost ages. It finally refused to show connections - required registration. Their freemium also has some restrictions - it refused to change system connections.

I tried Zone Alarm free FW, their application control appeals to me, it's HIPS-like, but unfortunately my laptop went slow.

Now trying Malwarebytes FW, former Binisoft. So far seems nice. In different accounts keeps different settings. In Medium Filtering, Display Notifications, with their recommended rules at installation.

Zemana has had its moments, but it seems to be abandoned - again.

Again? I was using it for a little bit, some months ago. I, like many others, pointed out some false positives which, if a product is actively developed, you know, that's fine and expected. What I found peculiar was this polite acknowledgement and earnest promise to fix it and weeks later, the fp is/are still present. Sooooo, I really want to add it permanently to my setup. But there is instability, it seems. People often ask: is the anti-keylogger still good? Is the scanner still good? The liaison, JMSafe, no longer works there since July. And Zemana staff made one recent post at Malwaretips about Deep Fakes Oct. 4th and promptly disappeared again. Very mysterious.

I've used Zemana as on demand scanner and to me it offered fast scan, without FPs. I uninstalled it because it created unnecessary scheduled task that checks for update every 5 minutes.

While I know nothing about any of that I can offer my scanning experiences with WD, EEK, ZAM and MBAM. A few months ago I started to experience some ad-based popups in my Chrome browser. While I don't believe those popups 'harmed' my system they nevertheless were very annoying! Since I use WD as my realtime security system I ran some 'quick' and in-depth (really slow!) WD scans. Well, WD pronounced my system to be clean (?) so I decided to add a 2nd opinion scanner (as a check on WD).

I first tried the portable Emsisoft Emergency Kit (EEK), finding its GUI rather cumbersome and its scan also pronounced my system to be clean (?). I then installed and ran ZAM Free. My immediate impresson was that its GUI is very user-friendly and I noticed the scan ran quickly. More importantly, it revealed a Chrome hijacker and recommended its deletion (which I did). Yup, that was the culprit causing my popups, they are no more! :thumb:

Since then (reading comments re ZAM FPs) a Wilders member suggested that MBAM Free might be a better choice than ZAM, so I installed and ran it. Ironically MBAM produced 3 FPs in its very first scan! So I removed MBAM and will be staying with ZAM (so long as it's viable).

Strange, I haven't noticed that at all. Did that occur with the latest version?

Zemana v2 seemed to die with the departure of it's founder Emre Tinaztepe.
I reported problems with v2 (scans crashed), which were acknowledged but never resolved.

There was a brief renaissance with v3, but the developers seemed to have fallen out.
I was a beta tester for v3, and still have the latest stable version on my test machine, but increasing FPs indicate it is no longer under development, or maintained.

The posts on Wilders e.g.: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/zemana-antimalware-2-beta.372569/page-111#post-2781636
and MT: https://malwaretips.com/threads/zemana-antimalware-3-0-premium-beta-is-here.92494/page-7#post-831527 and following gave me this idea.
Post by @plat1098 above (#39985) would appear to confirm. Else troublesome, and unreliable?

I agree with you that Z appears to be dying. They clearly have abandoned beta testers who helped them get V3 off the ground in their attempt to revive the company. Have you submitted FPs directly to Z with no reply? If that's the case then they truly are dead, at least to me. This looks like deja vu all over again. And no way I would bother with their real-time version.

That's very disappointing to 'hear'. I just sent them an email to see what (if anything) they have to say. :doubt:

I hope you get a satisfactory response. When it was in active development 5-6 months ago, it showed a lot of promise. There were some peculiarities, though, like launching Internet Explorer when you clicked a certain link within the user interface, even though your default browser was explicitly something other than IE. There were other things. And then the abrupt silence around the second week of July. So, even though I haven't written it off completely, it's regarded with some caution and disappointment. I hope there's a renaissance again some time, I really do.

Seer, thank you for confirming the two scanners (Norton and AdwCleaner) are adequate. :thumb: I'll keep an open mind for future additions.

No, just 'Reported as safe' within the tool (for example, release of BlackFog Privacy v4).

I still have it installed but ...
