I agree with this....but a couple of things concern me:

    1) Eset is going in the direction of a suite....but unlike others (Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, etc.) there is a lot of talk that they "MAY" do away with and not offer a stand-alone AV in the future! There are several threads in the NOD forum that have suggested this...and I've never seen that rumor outright squashed. So this is something to think about for the future.

    2) ewido's "MERGER" with Grisoft. Maybe ewido will remain the same...maybe it will improve.....but maybe it will become bloatware or even possibly a less effective product in the future....who knows.

Considering these two possibilities....if KIS runs fine on your system, then I'd likely stick with just the one program versus two seperate. Just my opinion and little two cents, though....

It's been shown in the Eset forum that a stand alone AV will continue. But here's more info. http://www.nod32.sk/en/company/Worlds-first-launch-of-new-generation-NOD32-on-trade-fair-CeBIT

Are any of you using Ewido 4 beta concerned about the cpu spikes it produces when the guard is on?

Also to Brandon, are you running OA AV+ with the antivirus engine on even though you have Viruscape 2006?

OA AV+ works fine (atleast in testing) with most other resident AVs.

Hmmm maybe that is okay I suppose I show the same. Though I was used to having very low idle cpu usage :D . I am more of burning and encoding and those CPU spikes can cause damage in my situation. Maybe if you don't do any of that and just browse and stuff, its okay.

well to get those "CPU spikes" i had to browse some 70+ video files.

idly, ewido guard rarely uses any CPU; usually less than 5%.

I don't mind it but it should be fixed (if possible)

Yes I am, as there is no conflict between them so why not ;)

For all of you with multiple HIPS, anti-spyware and other various security apps, what the heck do you do online to warrant such an array of defensive software? This is not intended to be a flame, just curious as to why the (what I consider to be) overkill. I run a quality on access A/V, A/T, and firewall behind a good router. How much is enough!? o_O

im rele not sure why i use HIPS or even an AT.

despite my use p2p and my visting of questionable sites, i get less than one infection per year.

the only security program doing work regularly are hosts secure (filtering ads in ie), proxomitron (filtering ads in firefox), firefox (no activex support and several security extensions) and look n stop (hackers have a 24/7 job).

i have ewido mostly for testing and as a backup scanner to nod32. nod32 rarely finds anything and ewido just finds cookies.

regrun monitors my registry and online armor controls any executables that i run, but they have yet to protect my comp against malware.

having all these icons in my systray does look pretty tho :D

    Real-Time:

    Norton Internet Security 2006
    WinPatrol Plus

    Browser:

    FireFox w/ NoScript extension

    On-Demand:

    NOD32
    SpySweeper
    CounterSpy
    Ad-Aware
    Ewido Anti-Malware
    Spyware Doctor

    Misc.

    IESpyAD
    SpywareBlaster
XP Smoker PRO (for tweaking XP services + settings)

I only run Norton IS along with WinPatrol in REAL-TIME (use only FireFox browser) and have NEVER experienced any issues to date. I've tried Online Armor, Process Guard, Prevx1, etc....but I really have NO need for them.

My system is super-fast and stable and MOST IMPORTANTLY....I am enjoying my online experience instead of being paranoid about security/privacy issues.

Not at all. :) Most of the time, newer isn't always better. In fact, I always laugh when software companies abandon tried and true features to explore "cool and shiny new features" that introduce all sorts of bugs and problems, only to return to the original features in later builds. Since by this time most users have all but forgotten the old features, their reintroduction into the software is heralded as "the most amazing thing eva, kthx u r0x0rz!"

Honest to goodness....they almost make it look like they do these sorts of things on purpose.

See now thats what I wanted to do one day, but the proactive defense in that suite is not perfect yet.

I'm also wondering about AT, AS, whether they are becoming redundant (I stopped using them for ages now, my system is always immaculate) and the only trojans Nod32 caught they were from infected CD roms given to me as I often check photo presentations on my computer (it's interesting to note that the infected CDs came all from systems protected by Norton AV).

I do run Ewido once a month, but it has never found anything. As far as HIPS, I have PG Full for two reasons: Rootkits and termination protection.

Are we winning the battle against malware? I'm planning to buy another computer, and will only install 3 applications (7 at the moment).

for me, using HIPS or other supplemental security can be (but not always) a catch 22.

common sense prevents me from downloading a good majority of malware; so my security rarely gets a workout.

and i dont buy any music CDs (ahem, Sony) and i rarely buy games (but so far, no starforce or punkbuster). im not gonna get rootkits that way.

the people who would benefit from additional security, wouldnt bother to learn to use it properly, and thus, defeat the purpose.

I always change my setup cause I like playing around with differnet software especially free beta's. I don't care if they work or don't work together cause thats where you learn. Someone who works with different software that hasn't been tested should keep a working copy of windows prior to what you install. Thats why for me its no trouble to revert back and install a whole new line-up of security software. I use drive snapshot to restore my windows and I have never had a problem doing so and its fast and easy to restore. I practically restore every day or every other day for any little annoyance I have with anything in windows that I can't fix. I have four hard drives and I always have two without the restoring having an impact on them, so all my permenant files are in those drives that are left out of the restore. I am not really paranoid about what can happen, but I am like a little kid, when I see something new, I want it too. Thats where I get all my big lists of security and have to nail down what works and what doesn't. I am more of a resource person, the less the better. If I can run 5 or more security software programs and they work well together with very low impact, then why not. Really for me its not to have a lot of security, but to keep trying out what works and honestly for people like me, there probably isn't an end.

    Hi dja2k,

Why not? Maybe because the day you get infected, 2 or more of your security products will interact or even compete? o_O ... Leaving you with a frozen computer, a nice BSOD or even mightbe an infected machine :ninja:

No worry mate, just a teasing guess ;)

    Regards
