I am using Returnil Premium Edition. Do you recommend I still switch to Shadow Defender? :) Also, I am looking to replace Zemana Antilogger with a HIPS or IDS but can't seem to find one that I like. I tried Defensewall and it caused a slowdown on my system. I have also ruled out mamutu and I am unsure about threatfire. I don't like classical HIPS that like to prompt you about just about everything (Online Armor, Comodo D+)

    * Primary Response Safeconnect Beta 3.5
    * Defensewall HIPS 2.45 (made a typo twice :p)

All exhibits are admirable of course. But not a thing or no one or anything can scale the wall i've implimened that borders on a radiation shield of my super hi high-tech 21st century untouchable strategic defense systenm i spent many years prefecting the ultimate shield to relax in perfect comfort while surfing the waves all aroud this internet system.

So far I haven't seen any infections to my computer since common sense was tuned up last 2005.

    3 different machines, 3 different set-ups

On my daughters Visata SP1 laptop

    LUA
    NIS2009
Sandboxie (forced for MSN etc to keep the crap locked away)

    On older XP SP3 machine

    KIS2009
    Sandboxie

    On main Vista SP1 machine

    Avira Premium
    OA3 - Paid
Sandboxie (one for each internet facing app with restricted process/internet access)
Returnil (for any infrequent trips to the dark side)

Behind NAT router and MBAM and SAS on demand for all three.

Might seem to some an eclectic mix but they all run fast and light and are fit for the job they do in each machine.

Might move OA3 out and just use Visa firewall with one of the following promised apps - Defensewall with outbound protection, Malware Defender with network restrictions or Zemana with firewall if when they appear they prove to be as good as they could be.

    Cheers

What kind of statement do we make to the world when one of our hobbies is using/testing/playing with programs that really feed our need to be even more paranoid than we were just the day before?
    Gotta love this place.

Seems to work pretty well for being completely free. I am trying out Comodo CAVS, which is replacing my Avira Free A/V for the time being. It works well, but it definitely needs heuristics.

CIMA like heuristics will be added to the AV Soon, And CIMA heuristics are very powerful and informative. :)

Added Freespire to my laptop security!
Altered my partitions and installed it on dual boot.

Use my XP partition for working from home and the Freespire partition for browsing and when the kids want to use it.

Must admit that Linux has come a long way in the last few years.
Doddle to use and the GUI is much improved now. No bloatware and the CNR (click n run) facility is fantastic.
10 minutes to install, no drivers required and even my PCMCIA wireless card was detected.

My kids weren't lost, took them about 2 minutes to find the internet messenger service (built in) and were browsing straight away.
My eldest even managed to import the bookmarks file from firefox across the disk divide!

Oh and did I mention Freespire is free as is the Open Office suite that was included.
Certainly an security option to consider!

    :D

Still don't understand why some of you throttle the life out of your machines. I'm using the same setup as previous post:-

    Desktop: Archlinux behind router.

Laptop: XP behind router / Hardening / Firefox / Occasional CureIt scan.

I'm looking for feedback on my current setup as I'm still a little wet behind the ears.

Windows Vista 32 bit on Laptop
    Wireless G Router w/ Firewall
    Zone Alarm (Basic Firewall)
    Bit Defender (Antivirus/Anti-Spyware)
    System Mechanic (Active Care)
    Firefox - no scripts
    Opera

    What am I missing?

Ditch Zone Alarm, Bit Defender, and System Mechanic. There are better alternatives for each out there. Go wiith a rule-based firewall, such as Kerio 2.15 or Looknstop. Try Kaspersky or Avira, if you are intent on using an antivirus. Also, why are you using both Opera and Firefox?

Thanks for the feedback. First, I wanted to try LNS but when I tried to download it for a test drive I got a message saying publisher not recognized. So I opted not to try it. Second, I use SM primarily for maintenance and only secondarily for catching spyware/parasites. I'm running Bit Defender on trial, so far I've had no problems. I downloaded Avira today, which I plan to run weekly scans with. Finally, I prefer OPera but I can't use it for some things, like banking.
