Everything ran well, it just runs a little heavier than Comodo.

My resource usage hiked up 5% more while using Outpost

    HaHaHa, I'm picky I guess

So, Outpost will be used on my son's computer, instead of mine and his.

Now my comp is mostly in the "Shadow Mode" of the SD. It's rather fanny not to forget to commit the changed and downloaded files.

  9. After a brief flirtation with AppArmor, I'm back to Noscript and iptables... and OSSEC, because if my laptop does get compromised I want to know about it.

Paradox... with NoScript you'll never get compromised.

I feel you though. My HIPS would hurl a bunch of obscenities my way, in a big red box if I were compromised.

But naturally, with NS, a default deny SRP, SBIE, and VTHC scanning everything newly introduced to my box with a gallizion different (always up to date) engines... that doesn't tend to happen often. In fact I can count the amount of times on 0 fingers...

and if it someday does, well... that's why I laid down the $50 for Macrium Standard.

What happened to Kerio 2.1.5 Lonewolf?... That seemed like such an ideal app for you. So light, great for XP. If I hadn't fallen in love with a HIPS I'd use it instead of Comodo.

Also jmonge... I really liked that setup you showed of (I think) EAM, SBIE & Shadow Defender. My favorite I've seen you post yet. Any competitive/light real-time AV along with those 2 apps is a great setup, really.

So important to backup yet too often overlooked. It astounds me that so many people will blissfully spend hours re-installing Windows and all their programs and updates from scratch, when they could instead spend a few minutes re-installing a recent image.

  14. Likely true for a Linux desktop, but sometimes bad stuff happens.

This is the one problem with OSSEC, notification is not in realtime; it goes to my mail spool. It would be nice if I could invoke an xmessage popup if a certain severity threshold were exceeded.

There OTOH Linux has the advantage. Let's hear it for tarball backups and 30 minute reinstalls...

Indeed. I think because they also don't take the few minutes needed to learn how to reimage. I don't have much to backup, but whenever I come across new installers I do so. Also I'm kinda working on writing a book... it's a constructive way to spend some free time. Other than that, not much changes on my box. But definitely good advice to keep an up to date backup... more than 1, actually.

I have a 500 GB Western Digital Elements external HD. It has way more than enough space for everything I have. I travel light. An 8 GB Kingston Data Traveler Vault Privacy, 256-bit AES encrypted USB stick that I double backup the important stuff on. And anything on that that isn't sensitive ; )... I have triple backed up on a regular USB stick. And keep an up to date DVD-RW too... so really I'm quadri-backuped (new word... ya heard it here first).

Anything I consider sensitive, I run only from that encrypted stick, and don't store locally.

Very awesome approach too. Scan new files with VT Hash Check and you're good to go.

Of course... it'd work TOO well for you, and you'd get bored to tears within a day. So it won't stick.

I'd substitute Sandboxie 3.76 for AppGuard personally... but different strokes for different folks.

    I always love your setups!
