    1. I like Avira for it's protection, but I do not like the ads, That is why I don't use it anymore. As far as I can tell (Personal tests), Bitdefender Free has passed in everything I threw at it. The memory consumption is tad bit high for my tastes, but I like it enough to where I don't want to get rid of it at this point. Plus it doesn't feel like the computer is dragging at all. Thanks for your recommendation though.

    2. I have a licensed copy of Shadow Defender, It's good protection. I just don't use it because the last version I used was a bit buggy on my machine.

    3. Comodo Dragon won't run with ExploitShield, even if you rename the executable. ExploitShield I do want to keep no matter what.

Once again, I want you to know...I do appreciate your input.

If I remember correct I thought there was a tweak in the registry to cancel out the ads. That was one thing about Avira that drove me nuts was ads and popups after an update. IMO having ads dont force people to pay but to look for a free alternative that dont slam us with ads.

Good price, I got Bullguard2013, 5 licenses, 3.2 years for $40.00.. Ridiculous price really. That's about .20cents a month per PC for coverage over the next 3.2 years. Virtually free!

Image (just in case) - check

Yep... you're good to go! Everything else is really just window dressing.

I blocked the update ad with D+, and blocked the splash screen via a registry tweak.

And blammo... annoyance free free version.

If I remember correctly, if you disable auto updating in the settings but then use the scheduler to schedule them in intervals instead, then you don't get the ad. + then you can update it more than once a day.

Yeah, I pretty much used & abused Avira Free. Really nice, light AV that played well with Comodo FW/D+ back in my real-time AV days.

Could not possibly agree more. All these neat toys we play with are rendered moot if we lock down our OS/browsers to begin with. The one thing I feel is missing from my setup is a dedicated anti-exploit solution, like EMET or ExploitShield. I won't use EMET because .NET Framework is bloated like crazy on XP and I just won't install it period. Then EMET slows down XP on top of that.

But I greatly diminish the need for such products because I don't have vulnerable services/processes leaving ports hanging wide open and/or listening in on them. Heck, I have hardly any services or processes running period, only what's absolutely necessary to make my box run properly. I can type in "netstat -an" into my command line and see nothing listed there at all. That is decreasing attack surface.

I do plan on giving ExploitShield a good hard look though once there's a stable/final build of it, and it's matured a bit, since it doesn't rely on .NET Bloatwork to function.

What comes built-in, lol. Windows Firewall + Windows Defender (in Windows 8, Windows Defender is a complete AV).

Avast Free + Windows Firewall is another nice alternative IMO.
