No. I was having issues with Comodo firewall, sandboxie and WSA. When I tried running firefox it would run for a few minutes and then freeze up. It happened just about everytime. I added a bunch of exceptions in comodo and sandboxie. Nothing has seemed to work so far.

Thanks for response.. .I wasn't trying to hate on anyone... The main reason I view this thread is because I'm always looking to find something more efficient then what I have. One of my fears is becoming complacent and stagnant because "it just works"

I read mixed views about Avast constantly...I'm never quite sure if I've never had a problem because I'm careful or what. But, yeah, I would invest $$$ in a good AV program. I wouldn't want a full suite or anything.

One thing I've wondered about people who have a long list of apps is how well those apps play together.

I just woke up but i'll be sure to check out that link when I get some coffee in me

Oh, and I don't really know if this is more security or privacy but different browsers for different identities + tails on a USB thumbdrive if I'm on a public computer

I guess I'm asking why you chose what you chose...what you're hoping to protect against, what your actual risk level is against getting attacked or infected. Although, yeah, I know it's important to be vigilant and prepared.

Anyway, all I was asking is *why* you think those programs are better/more efficient than mine or the other guys...what do you look for...that kinda stuff.

Coffee! Snowden, I'm just having my first cup of the day as I read your post, a home-roasted Guatemala Finca La Florencia. Yes I have other obsessions besides security.

Didn't see any hating or other negativity in your post. No worries there.

A lot of people here will tell you (I'm one of them, in fact I'm doing it now) that the best security is knowing what you are doing on the computer. The more you know, the less security you need. Then the strength of an AV is less important. Avast has a good reputation here, well-made software always improving. It does the job. But all security software has weaknesses, and so begins the fun part: layering. Putting together effective combinations that cover the most vulnerabilities without interfering with what you want to do.

You are right to wonder about a large number of apps working well together. That's mainly trial and error. I've tried probably hundreds of security apps by now, and my current list is as fast as it gets on my computer for the coverage it provides. Webroot Secure Anywhere is the most recent addition, not sure what to call it, a hybrid AV? Very impressed, zero impact as far as I can tell. You might give it a try if you want something different.

As far as telling you why we use what we do, one problem with that question is just how long it would take to go into all the details. Whole threads, multiple threads, are devoted to each of the security apps we talk about. Just look at how many posts are in this thread and you get the idea. If you are curious about one, do a search here or on the web and start reading. Or ask specifically about one and you'll probably get lots of answers.

    Sandboxie, and some other stuff.
(I know, I say that all the time, but I like the way it sounds!)
Have really started to get into the habit of more frequent browser closures with Sandboxie so as to continually discard any uninvited guests.
And as all Sandboxie users well know, it's always advisable to close and repopen the browser prior to connecting to a banking or online shopping site.
Sandboxie has made my internet experience so much safer!

justenough: thanks for the reply...that's the one downside of having long threads and so much information. It's difficult to sift through.

I definitely agree with you about the importance of layering and being informed....I think I might setup a VM and play around with some of the programs people have been mentioning.

Are you using MBAM real-time along with WSA? Powerful combination, any slow-down?

Without question, that's paramount to anything you see in people's sigs. And with tools like SBIE & Shadow Defender, and manual scans of any new files before moving them from the virtual environment to the real system... real-time AV's really become less important (in addition to end user know how).

Still I would supplement it with some front line tools & hardening, like NoScript, link scanning (WOT/VTzilla), a good DNS service, and maybe something like Malware Domains ABP list. Not to mention the phishing filters integrated into your browsers.

I just down see real-time AV's having much value at all anymore to a seasoned end user. To a noob/average one though, it's often the "only" viable option.
