What is your security setup these days?

Discussion in 'other anti-malware software' started by dja2k, Dec 15, 2005.

  1. From https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=111264&page=1066

    1. Switched to MSE, because their new release is much improved and like any new product, it deserves another round. Boohoo, so what if MSE doesn't reach the standards of Bitdefender or Avast. It's still a good product, and to the point I don't download malware on purpose.

    2. Not a shared-laptop, because it's my PC. I'm in control.

    3. HMP was uninstalled, I didn't need it and I never actually used it. Simple as that

    4. We have basic broadband in rural areas. You called it pathetic? Why, because you think everything you have is better...

    5. I was not aware of the issue Bitdefender were having, and I would not have expected it from such a reputable company.

PS: Aventador, can you back off. I do not want to hear your opinions, nor do I want you to speak on my behalf without knowing the full facts. As well as, I think you are plain rude.

Stormer, right on man. MSE is the best freebie out there and from what I have been privy to, may rival the paid crap in about 12 months. So regardless what people may say, it is, just plain darn good.:thumb: :thumb:

If you browse this forum you can browse Bitdefenders just as easily. Numerous issues about slow updating. Give it a couple of days and its fixed. Every company has issues. Look at Norton behind with every new build of Firefox or Chrome. Kaspersky's forums are also filled with issues. Everyone company free or paid has issues. So I guess as soon as there is one issue with software we all need to uninstall it rather then researching it.The new version of MSE is still the same MSE. They did magically improve there detection rate.

HMP is fully portable and never needed to be installed. Just keep in on a USB stick for an emergency. Whats your backup plan? Do you have a disk image? What happens when MSE fails? What will you do? We are all in control of our laptops. I spend my hard earned money on mine. Because of that I want it protected by a top av and not an inferior av.

Read the recent testing which has been posted. MSE is never a winner. Top free av's go as follows:

    1. Avast
    2. AVG
    3. Avira
    4. Panda Cloud
    5. MSE

Look at MRG results and AV Testing.org. Show me where MSE is doing top notch detection.

Aventador, in case you hadn't noticed this is a friendly thread. Every time you use the 'Rolls eyes (Sarcastic)' face I wonder what you think you are winning and why. Even though someone's reasons for security don't agree with yours, you can still respect them, and maybe even learn from the differences. For instance someone who knows what they are doing doesn't necessarily need the most powerful AV, and there may be good trade-offs in using a weaker one. Instead of creating a battle where there isn't one, you could have a friendly attitude of wanting to learn why we do what we do.

Learned from Aventador about the $6 BitDefender deal, and though I don't usually use an AV, that's too good not to try. So far it's working great, without the conflict it had before with MBAM on my machine.

Your welcome. I don't believe in paying for protection but when its only $6 what the heck. Nothing to lose.

Uninstalling a product cause it had a small issue which was resolved and replacing it for an inferior product is not a wise choice. He would be better off with Avast,AVG or Panda.

It would not be a wise choice if using your criteria. Your criteria are yours, and might not be the best for someone else. I've used MSE happily for long stretches, knowing full well its pluses and minuses, the trade-offs. I've even gone longer stretches with no AV at all. Tell me Aventador, are you going to give me a 'Rolls eyes (Sarcastic)' reaction too? Am I an idiot in your book?

No reason to give you rolling eyes. Where did you get Fanboy's Ultimate for Chrome? I can only find it for FF. I look at products from this point of view.............."Would I want to install this on my customers pc's? Do I trust it?". If the answer is no I will not use it nor even recommend it to my customers.

no matter what product is installed, it will fail, someone, at sometime. We spend way to much time waiting on so called testing orgs and their results to rank software, when in reality, software only fails or wins on the individual computer.

I will not in the future rank or state something is great or bad, because the only true life result I have to equate it with, is my computer. That doesnt mean it didnt win or fail on someone elses.

Is there any difference between adding Easylist then adding EasyPrivacy or adding Easylist+EasyPrivacy into one. I know it sounds dumb. Right now I have them as separate subscriptions.

I'll take it one step further, most of you spend wayy too much time changing, switching software combos on your pc,some change hourly, some change daily.Bottom line, find something that'll work and stick with it. Building a software fortess proves nothing.

THANK YOU.....................My point exactly. This thread and the way people change there setup is crazy. Some change there setup more often then there underwear. After I booted up my laptop I installed Avast Free 7. That has been running on it for almost a year. When I saw Downloadcrew offering BD for only $7 I could not pass it up. Its common knowledge that a product will fail. Hence the importance of having a backup plan such as a disk image.

Well I'm using VT Hash Check for the "Download Statusbar" auto-scan tweak that was mentioned several pages back in here. Works great... 40 different opinions and it's real snappy, a little box pops right up. This is my psuedo real-time AV... resource free.

    Highly recommended.

As for people switching their approaches as the wind changes direction... the cure for that in many cases is Sandboxie. Since deploying it the only thing that's really changed for me is what I just mentioned above.

Major props to you again Djigi!

HMP always saves me. HMP is on-demand and portable as well. You never know when a malware slips by your current setup.;)

Although I live in city I have very slow speed internet connection with low bandwidth. I know what you mean.:)

May I suggest you use MBAM and Sbie. Those are awesome apps.:thumb:

Though HMP is fully portable it adds registry entries if the user chooses to have scheduled scans, add HMP in their context menu, have a shortcut. If the user decides to remove them it can be called uninstalling.

My set-up for my new desktop:

    Windows 7 x64
MSE (not a bad choice for windows 7 x64 because of kernel patch protection)
    Sandboxie
    HMP
