    Thanks for the helpful summary.
I'm not surprised by the current tally, except like you, I would have figured MBAM would have garnered some more mentions.
And the same for DefenseWall. Only one vote surprises me.
Looking forward, I personally find it hard to imagine a program that would perform well enough to unseat Sandboxie from its lofty position. :thumb:

The charm of the novelty... After reading this, i am sure nothing else will ever surprise you:

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/65354-10-windows-winodws

An interesting (retrospectively), review of WinMe, by a "Windows specialist".

    http://winsupersite.com/windows/windows-millennium-edition-windows-me-review

    Highlights:

"It is, quite possibly, the most under-hyped version of Windows ever created."

" it offers enough reliability improvements and new features for me to recommend it heartily to most Windows 9x users "

    ------------------------------------------------------

Funny, that years later, Windows Me, passed in history, as the definition of "unreliability" and the most "hyped", virtually useless, version of Windows. I remember myself, i had just bought a PC with OEM Me pre-installed and after a few months, i was desperately running from one shop to another, asking if i could still buy a Win98SE CD (nowhere to be found) and at the end, i ended up in a support shop of a certain PC brand, which didn't really sell retail software, but where as a "favour", the technician took pitty of me and sold me an OEM 98SE CD... Only then did i manage to really enjoy my new PC...

Also, funny, but i think the free Windows Movie Maker , mentioned on the "ugly side" of that review, was one of the most pleasant features, to the point that i still have it (v.2.6) installed on my Win7.

How time makes things look different...

Yeah, fortunately, that was from 2001. The responses right after release, as well as support, would have been more interesting still. By 2001, many had gone beyond the "novelty" factor. Most probably, as soon as Win9 will come out, nobody will want to stay with 8. It will be remembered mostly for having to hack it in order to look like 7... Cause even Win Me had more new and useful features bringing to the table compared to 98SE than 8 does. Oh and WinMe was also booting faster than 98SE ;) (interesting detail).

defensewall does not surprise me. the product is excellent, its only flaw being it does not work in 64bit machines. So i have never been able to use it but I will buy a license when the developer get readies a 64bit verison! .I guess most member in wilders must be using 64bit machines as well.

Windows 8 does surprise me. I thought i might be one a few who like windows 8,but its nice to find many peers who think the same.

Ah, good point. That was overlooked that when I proclaimed surprise that it had not received more votes.
    Thanks for reminding me. :)

Quite possibly there are better uses for computers, but security software has the capability to create an environment in which those better uses can exist. ;)

Okay, I'll narrow my favorites down. Firefox - Adblock Plus - Avast! - MBAM. Do these count as I have had them for years?

To be honest, most of mine are games.

Some people have OCD about security, constantly uninstalling and trying something else. It's like a modders disease or something, where you spend more time modding a game than playing it. I don't fall into that trap. Once a year I test products, and either use the same one, or find a new one, then move on, forgetting about security products for another year. I think folks take it a bit too far.. Maybe it's because I am used to Linux, where we use the computer and don't think about security or viruses, that spoiled me, so I tend to ignore that sort of thing with Windows. This place can turn into security theater far more than I care to admit, and most of it is pointless.

The final post in this thread, I suppose.
No votes in more than a week, so the totals.

SBIE received the most votes with 12
Windows 8 finished second with (appropriately) 8 votes.
    Along with the above, those applications receiving votes following the first summary and to-date vote total including those in the first summary were;

    ShadowDefender (5)
    Firefox (2)
    Adblock Plus (2)
Avast (no designation as to pro, free, or IS) (1)
    MBAM (4)
    Directory Opus (1)
    MeGUI (1)
    Drop Box (1)
    PS3 Media Server (1)

According to my count, a total of 43 applications received votes either in whole or in part.
Example, a couple of applications were listed under two names, such as RollbackRX/CTM so each was given a vote.

Combinations such as Google Nexus 7/Jelly Bean 4.2 garnered a vote for each.

Many thanks to all who posted and commented.

I think next time the title should inc. the year. I was surprised to see AppGuard with only 2 votes. Nevermind. With its V4 just over the horizon i'm sure it'll be a big contender for 2013.
