Not only will the internet likely no longer exist behind a screen, but it is probable that we will interact with it differently.

We'll manipulate objects using augmented reality (AR), explore virtual-reality (VR) worlds, and meld the real and the digital in ways we can currently not imagine.
And what will that mean for the world of work? We are already transitioning away from the nine-to-five commute, and turning our backs on the traditional office setting. This is thanks to two years of pandemic lockdowns, and a newfound love of, or tolerance for, virtual meetings.

So will the logical next step be working in the metaverse, the planned virtual universe where cartoon-like 3D representations of everyone will walk around, and talk and interact with others?

The metaverse has become an over-hyped term, so it's important to note that it doesn't actually yet exist. And even those invested in the concept disagree about exactly what it will be.
Will rival virtual worlds interconnect in a way that simply doesn't happen at the moment between competing technologies?

Meta exec says the metaverse will eventually be as important as smartphones

A hot potato: Are you excited about the metaverse? Probably not. But Meta's chief product officer Chris Cox believes the naysayers will one day be proved wrong: when the virtual reality platform becomes so important in our everyday lives that it'll be comparable to smartphones.

Speaking during a panel about the VR technology at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, yesterday (via Insider), Cox said Meta believes that "one day that computing platform will be as important as the smartphone has become in our lifetimes."

Cox said Meta has been trying to build a virtual reality product line for almost a decade that is affordable, accessible, and impressive. The idea is for it to be incorporated into a broad range of areas, from social experiences and fitness to gaming, medicine, and drug development. Meta also wants it used to design the likes of sneakers and cars.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg continues to bet big on the metaverse. Reality Labs, the Meta division responsible for its metaverse ambitions, has lost around $16 billion since the start of 2021. But Zuck's faith remains unwavering; the CEO says rewards for all this investment won't appear for another decade, at which point the virtual reality platform could potentially start earning hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of dollars.

Interpol working out how to police the metaverse

The metaverse is the widely-discussed, but not yet realised, concept that in the future people will be represented by 3D avatars in their online lives.

Interpol has built its own virtual reality (VR) space, where users can do training and attend virtual meetings.
Mr Stock said it is important for the agency to not get left behind.

"Criminals are sophisticated and professional in very quickly adapting to any new technological tool that is available to commit crime," he said.
"We have seen if we are doing it too late, it already impacts trust in the tools we are using, and therefore the metaverse. In similar platforms that already exist, criminals are using it."

The environment, which can only be accessed through secure servers, enables police officers to experience what the metaverse could be, giving them a sense of the crimes that could occur, and how they could be policed.

Some people think the metaverse could be the future of the internet.
Instead of being on a computer, in the metaverse you might use a headset to enter a virtual world connecting all sorts of digital environments.

But because it's still just an idea, there's no single agreed definition of the metaverse.

Breaking news, we don't have to care about the Metaverse anymore, not that I ever did. It turns out that Zuckerberg is now all-in on this new AI hype, which is an improvement if you ask me.

Mark Zuckerberg Quietly Buries the Metaverse

There will be no press release, no big announcement, as he would have to acknowledge that he was wrong. But make no mistake: Mark Zuckerberg just buried the metaverse. The metaverse is dead.

The metaverse was supposed to be the Next Big Thing for the social-media tycoon, who in 2021 went so far as to rename his empire -- created from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp -- as Meta Platforms.
