I set it to manual, then made a backup image which was created just fine though the service didn't start. Then I mounted the image and tried to explore it and I could. So now I'm curious, does this service even need to be enabled at all?

Setting it to MANUAL doesn't necessarily stop its use... it may be activated when needed.

Test its "needability" by setting it to DISABLED... that'll letcha know.

I realize it can be activated when needed in Manual mode, but when it's activated shouldn't it show as "Started?" When using it as described above it hasn't shown as started.

Let me ask the question again in a little different way. Does anyone know exactly what Macrium needs this service for? I did some searching on my own but couldn't find the answer.

Many times, an image is the only place to find some important files that have been permanently deleted quite by accident, and maybe a few weeks ago or even longer. Then those required files and them only, can be restored to the current OS without the need to restore the entire OS. This can be enormously convenient, as one day you may discover yourself :)
