What is file format .heic ?
I've never ever heard of it.
According to VT it is: High Efficiency Image Format HEVC still image (.HEIC) from Samsung.
    Is that right?
I must admit that I panicked a bit after getting it from someone (in, let's call it, the semi-medical profession).
Maybe no panick is needed although I don't know how to open it (no, I haven't done that yet).
    TIA

I used to use an online converter---upload the image file in HEIC and get a JPG to download in return. Now I use an app on my WIN10 machine that I obtained from the Windows app store. I'm sure there is a similar app (or apps) for other platforms.

For what it's worth, when sharing HEIC image files from an iPhone, the iPhone will convert the files to JPG when they are sent as email attachment. If they are uploaded to something like Evernote or Box, or similar I assume, they will be uploaded in the original HEIC format. (I've either forgotten or don't know what happens if the HEIC file is shared with SMS, but my guess is it will be as the original HEIC.)

(Of course the person sharing the HEIC images could change the setting on their device to JPG format, if you can get them to do it.)

@Buddel Thank you very much my dear old friend!!
It gives me at least some, how do you say that in English (?), rest.
I haven't open it, and I have deleted it.
I was upset, I have to admit ...

    Thank you aih !!
I'm really learning now. I have an older mobile phone (for folks with bad eyes like me). It's only for phone and SMS (text). The file was first sent to me on that phone; well, I got bombarded with messages about it I couldn't read. It is what it is. Then I got it via email (in which I use only plain text).

Thank you too, Alec (in particular for the Wikipedia link)!! And sorry for my very late reply!

Well, all that "panic" and "being upset" was probably for nothing. But that's what you get in those circumstances (I haven't told even half of the story) ...
I did learn some things, that's for sure.

BTW, I looked at IrfanView. It looks from their FAQ that there is a plugin but you need to have Win10. Well, at the moment I still have Win7.

Again, thanks to you all for your replies. Much appreciated!

If anyone is looking for a quick and easy image converter, Squoosh is a good choice.
