Here's a whole thread in Hardware - (the mods will probably move this there, don't worry! :) )
you should get some good ideas here, Frank.

Getting an ext. hard drive and then buying an enclosure for it, seems to be not only cost effective, but longer lasting without as many problems,
    but to each his own.

    Luck!

i like the wd drives myself. i have had issues with seagates. the hitachi 2.5" drives have also been bulletproof for me and they make externals.

Fan of Seagates here. I have a ton of Seagate drives, havn't had a problem with any of them so far.

Two 1.5TB Internal that are about 8 months old, 1 TB Ext thats 1 year 3 mos old, 3 1TB Ext's (Limited Use, backups) that are 3 months old, and a FreeAgent Go (320GB) that I use for school so it does get lots of 'bumps' of travel, and its about 7 months old, also fine.

Depending on how much space you need, a Freeagent Go might work.. small so you can store it off-site with minimal footprint (or in a safety deposit box).
