winamp was aquired from AOL (not amazon,my bad), but they released the code to some developers which worked on it and removed some issues (also security). i use the latest (stable) build (WACUP) and anything works like charm. i need to adjust some settings, because of plugins.

    latest official: 5.6.6.3516 (5.666 build 3516)

    latest stable build WACUP

    "Preview v1.0.21.7236"
    (newer need registration: https://getwacup.com/community/)

the article is not correct at that time, limited to 5.8 which is rather old and not under development.

    edit: correction: aol

Winamp is hiding with America Online on Netscape Navigator. You can find them all on Alta Vista.

Talk about a blast from the past, Winamp! Used it for many years til I transitioned to Potplayer.

it seems that potplayer has focus on videos, not audio like winamp. for video winamp never was the right choice i say. most people changed to foobar(2000) or aimp. i like winamp because of small skins, i can reduce it to small line. but in case of multi monitor working this seems outdated. VLC 3 lost here 4-channel output (vlc 2 can do), winamp need plugin (matrixmixer), WM also can no longer use 4-channel here, lost it somehow.

    4-channel means - 2 front, 2 back, not realtek.

what i hardly need is a remote plugin, winamp has 2, AIMP pages only offer monkeymote which is not that nice as ampwifi (gen_ajaxamp)

    clementine stopped obviously, 2016
    https://www.clementine-player.org/

amarok still updated, this is windows link
    https://community.kde.org/Amarok/GettingStarted/Download/Windows
but only x86 available (same as clementine)

note: gen_ajaxamp works as aimp_ajaxamp in a subfolder in aimp plugins (like monkemote), but it has issues which makes it not really usable. monkeymote do right and it has the ability to remote volume with the android buttons which is not working on WACUP. i should try switch files to winamp, maybe the aimp dll is newer.

nice, very nice - matrixmixer is not recognized, but the channel mixing is working - 2 front, 2 back.

    thank you

I'm still using an old version, to listen to my MP3 music collection (mostly hip hop and R&B), it works just fine, at least on Win 8.

you really should install WACUP to reduce security leaks.

    seriously? omg.

i tried one of the latest rc/final (do not remember exactly), then i returned to the latest before they messed around with it -> 5.6.6.3516
i had crashes, missing plugins and more. the crashes were the most annoying part.

    bye bye winamp, case closed

That's a shame. I haven't used Winamp on any of my computers for many years. But about 9 years ago was I using it with visualisations, with the video sent to some LED panels at a club I worked at.

I sometimes still use an old version to play MP3 files. The newer Winamp v5 version was already a bit bloated.
