    Hello,

    After a lot of reading I decided to switch from Avast to the trial version of Avira Antivir Premium.
    Normally I used Comodo Firewall next to Avast.
    Is this also a good idea when I start using Avira Antivir Premium?
    And what can I add more to this setup?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Richard

    Hi!
    Yes you can use Comodo firewall with Avira Antivir Premium, that will pretty much cover it ;) .

    I personally just use windows xp firewall with it and run scans with SuperAntiSpyware from time to time.

    Cheers!

    Thanks.

    You use SAS Pro or just the free one?

    Keep COMODO FIREWALL and add some on-demand scanners such as MBAM or
    SAS free and you will be fine

    Avira covers blacklist needs very nicely.

    Drop Comodo then get an SPI-capable router (protects incoming better than a software firewall).

    Then all you would need is zero-day protection -- I recommend Malware Defender or Mamutu.

    Take a look at DefenseWall http://www.softsphere.com/ This along with Avira should provide excellent protection. DefenseWall will be adding outbound protection in the next release so you wouldn't need Comodo.

    I like SAS free too. I am trialing the pro version right now, but I don't like it as the CPU usage at idle goes up to 10% every second. CPU usage goes something like 0%-10%-0%-11%-0%-10% etc. If I exit SAS then cpu usage goes back down to 0%-1%-0%-2% etc. On a laptop this seems like it would affect battery life a bit, plus ot just annoys me. My suggestion is just use the free version of SAS and do scans once a week or so you won't have to deal with the resource usage that comes with real-time protection of the pro version.

    Good 0-day recommendations.

    As a AV-free user (HIPS) (ISR) (SandboxIE) (CyberHawk) what the majority concensus on running Avira free in this group also? Too much? Just right?

    My consensus would be...

    Avira sure seems to be very light on resources, catches every bug I have collected, updates work fine for me and it's free. I think Sandboxie is probably the best complement you can have for generic net use. I think all of the apps listed by posters are pretty good for sure. But I am leaning more towards

    SPI NAT Router
    Avira
    Sandboxie
    LUA/SRP
    Software Firewall if you are nervous/curious

    But then again, I have been running in the past lot's of security apps (hips etc) and am just looking to find an easier solution. When it comes down to it a properly configured OS, paired with the right (trusted) applications and proper net habits would seem a more logical deterrent than soley relying on software.

    Just my opinion anyway.

    Sul.

    Currently i am using these as my security setup:

    Realtime:

    * Avira Antivir Premium (trial) -> maybe move back to Avira Free after the trial period

    * Comodo firewall with defense +

    On demand :

    * SuperAntiSpyware free
    * Malwarebyte's Anti Malware
    * Dr Web Cure It

    FireFox 3.0 as my webbrowser.
    I think this is a great and safe setup.

    Please let me know your comments,and what do i need to change if I switch to Avira Free after the trial period?

    Thanks in advance.
