What can a Socks Proxy do that an SSH Proxy can't?

    What can a Socks Proxy do that an SSH Proxy can't?

    Can a Socks Proxy....
    Have your Preferred and Alternate DNS Server in TCP/IP Properties be forced to go through the proxy?
    Ping from the command line through proxy?
    NSLookup through proxy?
    DCS Port Explorer DNS lookup therough proxy?

    All other factors equal, is socks faster than ssh?
    By about how much?
    Anthing else why Socks proxies are better than ssh proxies?

    Does a socks proxy encrypt data traffic? I am not sure.
