The security hole, tracked as CVE-2020-8207 and classified as high severity, affects the automatic update service used by the Citrix Workspace app for Windows, and it can be exploited by a local attacker to escalate privileges or by a remote attacker for arbitrary command execution.

The vulnerability was discovered by a researcher from Pen Test Partners. The company has published a blog post explaining how the weakness can be exploited by a local attacker to escalate privileges to SYSTEM and remotely for arbitrary command execution.

According to Citrix, the flaw impacts Citrix Workspace app for Windows 1912 LTSR and 2002, and it has been patched with the release of versions 1912 LTSR CU1 and 2006.1.
Remote attacks are only possible if SMB is enabled and the affected update service is running.

Pen Test Partners: Raining SYSTEM Shells with Citrix Workspace app

Citrix Workspace is vulnerable to a remote command execution attack running under the context of the SYSTEM account. By sending a crafted message over a named pipe and spoofing the client process ID, the Citrix Workspace Updater Service can be tricked into executing an arbitrary process under the SYSTEM account.

Known Citrix Workspace Bug Open to New Attack Vector

A Citrix Workspace vulnerability that was fixed in July has been found to have a secondary attack vector, which would allow cybercriminals to elevate privileges and remotely execute arbitrary commands under the SYSTEM account.

The bug (CVE-2020-8207), exists in the automatic update service of the Citrix Workspace app for Windows. It could allow local privilege-escalation as well as remote compromise of a computer running the app when Windows file sharing (SMB) is enabled, according to the Citrix advisory.
The bug, though mostly fixed over the summer, was recently found to still allow attackers to abuse Citrix-signed MSI installers, according to Pen Test Partners (MSI is the filename extension of Windows Installer packages). This turns the bug into a remote command-line injection vulnerability.

“Both the local and remote privilege-escalation methods can only be exploited while an instance of CitrixReceiverUpdate.exe is running on the victim host as before,” the researchers concluded. “I think the remote vector is easier to exploit this time around since you can place both MSI and MST files on a network share under the attacker’s control.”

Pen Test Partners: The Return of Raining SYSTEM Shells with Citrix Workspace app

Back in July I documented a new Citrix Workspace vulnerability that allowed attackers to remotely execute arbitrary commands under the SYSTEM account. Well after some further investigation on the initial fix I discovered a new vector that quite frankly should not exist at all since the previous reported vulnerability.
