Looks like a repackaged version of DrWeb. Why buy this instead of DrWeb? What is the cost? It does not show anywhere. Is there some advantage to this over DrWeb?

Did you have some question, or did you want to make a point?

Well the idea doesn't look bad at all because the only really DrWeb weakness is interface, but or course there's the problem of Core Files updating and other disadvantages, maybe if DrWeb changes interface will be really cool.

I was viewing the Virus Chaser homepage and found this Virus Bulletin:

    http://www.virusdesk.com/nwi_en/news/news_200302.htm

Here Virus Chaser gets all 100% while DrWeb gets all 100% except 99,70 in "Standard". Is possible that with the same anti-virus engine?

Seems there's a free version available:

    quote from the FAQ:
[ You can download Virus Chaser from free download page of New Technology Wave
Inc. webpage www.virusdesk.com and also from www.VirusChaser.com.]

Could be interesting. But I'll stick with Avast4 for now :)

I have been trialing Virus Chaser 5.0 for the last week or so and here are some early thoughts/conclusions based upon my own use of the program and with communication with their support staff.

    1. Virus Chaser is an AV program which use the Dr Web engine and was written by the Dialogue Science team. A Korean Company- New Technology Wave Inc.- markets the program and it was released in June 2002. Initially the company has targeted Korea and Japan to gain market penetration.

    2. It is a small download - only 3.8mB- and you can download the program for a 3 month trial period. An English helpfile is also available for download from the site.

    3. However, at the present time you cannot purchase the program from the International site but this will be rectified sometime in the future. The site does not give any indication of price and my e-mails requesting such information have gone unanswered. This is because they are not yet ready for the market outside of Asia.

    4. The program cannot be installed if another AV is on your computer and disabling your running AV Monitor will not work. Once installed the interface is bright, with large icons for the main settings on the side of the main interface. It seems to have been written for XP. The on demand scanner speed is the same as Dr Web and the familiar green spiderguard has been replaced by a red spider. Again it has a very small memory imprint - 2-3mB under Win2000. It also uses the heuristic analyser of Dr Web.

    5. Differences between Virus Chaser and Dr Web are the following;

    (i) Settings for both the scanner and the guard are much simpler and there is less options to tweak your settings.

(ii) There is no spiderguard equivalent.

(iii) But there is a quarantine function and updating can be either manual or constantly in the background. There is a nice 'Latest Viruses' icon where the viruses updated are listed.

(iv) As already mentioned the rather dated GUI of the main scanner of Dr Web has been replaced by an attractive, easy to use interface.

    6. Support for the program is good as I have had several e-mails from support where the level of English is very high( Much, much better than my Korean ). :D

Overall this looks a very promising AntiVirus program to watch for in the future. This is not just a 'pretty' Dr Web in disguise. Using the Dr Web engine, it recently passed its first test over at Virus Bulletin. Depending upon the final price this could be a very competitive AV product.

PS I do not work for New Technology Wave Inc :D :D

As back-up I have DrWeb, F-Prot Win, Kaspersky Personal, and my old Nav2002. Most of the time I only really use Kav as the second opinion, but I run the others on demand for a full system scan once in a while, as subscriptions run out I'll just stick with Nod32 and Kav, I feel this is sufficient. :)

This is an update report on Virus Chaser.

At the present time, the Overseas site URL has changed to http://www.viruschaser.com/Eng/index.jsp. Unfortunately, all links to download the trial version and the English Manual are down, and have been for quite awhile.

I e-mailed their support department several times over the last few months but have received no reply whatsoever :'(. I did have a very good support contact but I now think he has left the company, as he did say that there was a rapid turnover of staff! Before he left he sent me a serial number to use with the program for 12 months of updates so I have just loaded VirusChaser up again and I will use this AV on one of my boxes here for the next year.

As mentioned previously, VC has a number of advantages over Dr Web, including a much better, cleaner interface and a Quarantine feature.

However, there is less control over the settings of the monitor and in particular the on-demand scanner and you cannot shut off the automatic background updating unless you have the corporate version of Virus Chaser.

It also appears to be more sensitive than Dr Web to any other installed AV programs. However, as with Dr Web, system impact is minimal with only 2 processes loaded up, using a total of 870Kb VM and 3.6MB memory.

Overall, the company is concentrating on the home market where competition is very cut-throat and when VC will be released to the Overseas market is, at the present time, anyones guess.

The main interest in Virus Chaser is I think as an indicator which way Dr Web may go in the future. This first version of VC is v5, while Dr Web is currently version 4 and both programs were written by Dialogue Science.

As one of the few people in the Western World able to use Virus Chaser over the next 12 months, I will post again if things improve overall. As long as the virus definitions continue I should be okay.

  17. Dont be so sure :) I use it.

BTW I'm not sure why you guys say it's only a 3 month trial, being using it since Feb and though theexpirday date license says 3 months, it always changes after each update. Mine currently reads May 2004.

Not sure what you mean, since i shut it off easily. It runs as a service.

Again, i find this statement strange. I have more then 3 AV installed, Virus chaser installed without a hitch.

?? There is a viruschaser spider, which is the AV monitor isnt that the same as spiderguard? or do you mean something else?

I wonder if we are using the same product :0

Okay i'm no bigshot antivirus tester like most of you here, but I like it . Better then AVG or AVast or Antivir anyday.

I have only just started to use the program again after a 2-3 week trial in February of this year, so vcf since you have been using VC for a much longer period, you are more of an expert on this AV than I am.

As you say, those people who downloaded the trial version before the site shut down now have a much better 'free' alternative to the likes of AVG.

I must admit that I have not paid much attention to the updating of Virus Chaser, as I have just started to use it again as a backup scanner. This 'home edition' has no alternative to shut down the automatic updating in the interface. As you say the service can easily be disabled, but an actual choice box in the main GUI should have been an option. This is the case in the Corporate Edition of the program.

I had great problems installing any other AV software with Virus Chaser on all 4 computers here, so the order of installation may be important.

I should have said that VC has no spidermail equivalent, not spiderguard. Although you can use the Dr Web spidermail component with Virus Chaser.

In my version of Virus Chaser, when I initially installed this AV, the expiry date was always 12 months from install and remained so. I have recently started to use it again and noticed that with a new install, you again have 12 months of updates, and therefore at the present time a very cheap option.

My remark about being the only Westerner using VC was stated with my tongue fairly in my cheek and it is good to hear there are some( lots more) other people enjoying this Dr Web clone.

Those of us lucky enough to have a 'long' trial version to use should post back here when the servers are again up and running, for the program download.

THIS ANTIVIRUS IS VERY GOOD!!! I have prove it and it is as good as dr.web, the only thing that I miss is the spider that shows the scanned mails, so that I could know that it was working good. The bad thing is that it is only sold in Asia. too badddd!!!!! :D

BlackCat says that the spider is missing, that is real, because the spider in dr.web shows(with right click mouse) how many mail you have received and if all of them were checked for dr.web. Virus Chaser doesn't have it. About this I agree with Black Cat.
OTHER IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE IS THAT DR.WEB TRYAL VERSION DOESN´T ELIMINATE VIRUS, TROJAN AND WORMS(MALAWARES) AND VIRUS CHASER DOES IT. :D

    Thanks for posting SPC

Yes the server is now working so if anyone is interested I would download now.

Even if you are quite happy with your present AV, would be worth keeping on your hard-drive, particularly if the virus definitions are continually available.

    Gusanito,

you can use the Dr Web spidermail component in VC if you would like an e-mail scanner.

how can I use the dr.web's spider mail component?I only have one spider that's the realtime scannner. And if I right click the mouse on the spider doesn't appear in the little window, as in dr.web, the mails monitored(how many mails I have received and have been sacanned)I think the real time scanner makes that job.(executable files, open archives, etc.)
Or can I take it from dr.web to use it with Virus Chaser?Bisides I hope that the finish time of the trial version doesn't gets my program. I send a mail to Virus Chaser to see where can I BUY this program for a whole year.

You use the Dr Web spidermail component.

I initially asked their support people about a e-mail scanner for Virus Chaser and they told me I could use the one from Dr Web. I did not use this in the end, but I presume you simply transfer the spidermail component from the Dr Web program over to the Virus Chaser folder. The spidermail checker was at one time available over at the Dr Web main site by itself but whether it is now I do not know. I would not worry too much about this as any malware entering from this area will be picked up by the running guard of VC.

I would be very interested if you receive any reply from their support section. I had a very good contact there whose English was superb and when I asked about a possible purchase, he sent me a serial number to use with the program which gives me 12 months of updates.

Unfortunately, I have received no replies whatsoever from this contact or from their general support address over the last few months and the main Overseas site was down as well. Hopefully, with the servers up again, this may mean that normal support resumes as well.

Keep us posted in how you get on.
