Viral “Remove China Apps” Removed From Play Store For Misleading Users

The viral app dubbed ‘Remove China Apps’ recently came into the spotlight as an app that detects and helps delete Chinese apps from smartphones. Now Google itself has removed the app from Play Store for violating its Deceptive Behavior Policy.

This policy prohibits software from encouraging or misleading users into “removing or disabling third-party apps.” And this was the sole function of Remove China Apps. It scanned phones for ‘Chinese apps’ by comparing the app developer’s country of origin with a database of apps developed in China.
Even though Remove China Apps was incompetent when it came to pre-installed Chinese apps that came bundled with smartphones, the app claimed its ability to do so.

It mostly flagged user-installed or third party apps as ‘Chinese apps’ and offered an option to uninstall them. Some of such third party apps are TikTok, UC Browser, CamScanner, ShareIt, Xender, etc.

Before its removal from Play Store, the app had already gained over 5 million downloads. In fact, until yesterday morning it was the top-free app on Play Store.

TechCrunch: A service that detects ‘China apps’ goes viral in India

Update (June 3, 2020): The app has been removed from Google Play. Data analytics company Sensor Tower estimates that it had been installed approximately 5 million times prior to removal and had ranked at No. 1 in India’s Android store for two days.

On Android, Remove China Apps has a near-perfect 4.9 out of 5 stars rating from nearly 180,000 reviews.
Despite its instant popularity, the app’s background is cryptic.
It’s also unclear how the developer defines “China apps.” For instance, will apps developed by overseas Chinese sound an alarm? How about a Chinese subsidiary that operates a fully localized team abroad?

Mitron app removed from Google Play store for violating policy

Mitron app — the popular Indian alternative for TikTok — has been removed from Google Play store on Tuesday. The app had over 5 million downloads. As of now, neither Google nor Mitron has revealed details about the removal of the application from the Play store.
However, chances are strong that the app has been taken down due to the security issues that indianexpress.com and other media houses reported earlier this week.

The app owner Shibank Agarwal, a student of IIT Roorkee, bought the source code of the app from a Pakistani coding company Qboxus and rebranded the app as Mitron and launched in India. Before officially launching the app in India Agarwal and his team ‘t even customise the coding or change the privacy policy.

Irfan Sheikh of Qboxus from Lahore confirmed to indianexpress.com that Agarwal did reach out to the company buy the source code of TicTic and launch as Mitron in India.
Sheikh, however, said that the company does not encourage their buyers to just put it out there for public use as it as it is.

'Mitron' the catchphrase of PM Narendra Modi was all over the headlines - at first for good reasons and then for bad ones.
Mitron enjoyed early success with over 5 million downloads within a month - a huge chunk of its popularity came from the anti-TikTok sentiment running high among Indians. But the success was short-lived as many controversies started surrounding Mitron.

Even though Mitron was removed from Google Play Store for violating the "spam and minimum functionality' policy," it wasn't something that couldn't be fixed. Mitron app, after getting necessary alterations, was allowed back in Play Store, where it is available for download once again.
