Perhaps this article can be helpful. https://www.makeuseof.com/best-url-shorteners/ Of the mentioned 6 URL shorteners, Bitly and TinyURL are familiar to me, in the sense that I've seen them mentioned before. Myself, I have no use for URL shorteners, and I do not like shortened URLs. When a shortened URL is used, I will use a URL unshortener to get the full URL.
Thanks, SouthPark. I wondered how the shortened URL would automatically display the full URL. I tested it. It shows the full original link when you click the shortened URL. That is only good if one knows v.gd. Otherwise, if one doesn't know v.gd, one still might feel very uneasy to follow a shortened URL.
What’s the use case for shortened URLs these days? (besides hiding real URLs for nefarious purposes?)
I use it to save space (e.g., to prevent line breaking if I have to cite a source) or to create bookmarks for myself between desktop and mobile since I don't synchronize my devices. Real-world example: I created https://v.gd/mslens on a PC to have a memorable link to sideload MS Lens on an Android device.
