The days of Microsoft having two separate Skype apps on Windows 10 are finally over. With the release of Skype version 8.61 this week (via Neowin), Microsoft announced that it was introducing an “enhanced Skype for Windows 10,” though that’s actually a bit misleading.

For those unfamiliar, Skype for Windows 10 is the version of the app that ships with the OS and gets updated via the Microsoft Store. The new “enhanced” version of Skype for Windows 10 that has now started rolling out is the same app as the standalone Skype client that can be installed manually, though Skype for Windows 10 users will lose some features along the way.

Skype for Windows 10 and Skype for Desktop are becoming one so we can provide a consistent experience. This lets us give the newest updates and improvements regardless of where you get Skype, from the Microsoft Store or from skype.com,” the Skype team explained on a support page.

Back in 2019, Microsoft announced that Skype for Business Online will be retired on July 31, 2021. So, there are only 12 months until the retirement of Skype for Business Online. Microsoft is recommending enterprise customers to migrate to Microsoft Teams for better communication and collaboration experience. Microsoft is confident that Teams can fully replace Skype for Business Online even for the most demanding enterprise customers.

Microsoft is only retiring Skype for Business. Skype for consumers and Skype for Business server will continue to exist beyond this date.

Skype just doubled the limit for participants in a call
After a few weeks of testing, Skype is rolling out a higher participant limit for calls to everyone

Skype 8.66 is now generally available. The latest update to Skype brings support for up to 100 participants within calls. It also includes several bug fixes and stability improvements.

Support for up to 100 participants in calls and bug fixes are rolling out to Skype on Windows, Mac, Linux, the Web, Android, iPhone, and iPad.
The previous limit for Skype was 50 participants per call.

With more people working and studying from home, it's always good to have an option to have more people on the call.

Many would argue that Microsoft's Skype is on its deathbed, but the company keeps updating the communication service with new features. Microsoft is now rolling out version 8.67 of Skype to users on multiple platforms, and it once again borrows new features from Teams, which is Microsoft's biggest focus as far as instant communication goes.

The highlight of this release is Together Mode, a new view for group video calls. With Together Mode, users can see every participant in the call as if they were in the same place, like a classroom or a coffee shop. The goal is to make the experience feel more natural as if users were actually together.

Skype for Business Online is being retired today

Two years ago, Microsoft announced that it is retiring Skype for Business Online on July 31, 2021, that is today. It tapped Teams as the successor to the communication tool, and urged organizations to migrate to the company's latest offering as soon as possible. The Redmond tech giant also stated that the move communicates its confidence in Teams. As such, Skype for Business Online is being retired today.

The firm has been planning the migration from Skype for Business Online to Teams since October 2017, with the latter also achieving feature parity in August 2018.

For companies which use Skype for Business Online only, a tenant policy change will be applied to shift all users to Teams Only mode. Meanwhile, those in hybrid environments will also be migrated to the same mode but Skype for Business Server users will remain unaffected and on-premises. Microsoft says that most organizations will be transitioned to Teams Only mode within 24 hours of initiating the assisted upgrade process.

Microsoft has published guidance over here for those interested in finding out how to move meetings data and contacts from Skype for Business Online to Teams, among other things.
It is important to note that after today, Skype for Business Online will not be accessible, but other related components such as Skype consumer service, Skype for Business Server, and the Skype for Business Online variant running on the China Sovereign Clouds Instance will continue to work as usual.

Microsoft still cares about Skype and it’s adding a ton of new features

Today, the Skype team announced a huge set of new features coming to Skype in the near future, promising to make the app better at just about every level. If you didn’t want to move on to Teams, it looks like Skype is “here to stay”, according to Microsoft’s blog post.

Diving right into what’s new, Microsoft is redesigning the call stage, the area of the call where participants are shown. There are tons of tweaks being made here, starting with a new design that fits both light and dark themes for the app. Next up, your own video feed will now be visible in the call stage as any other participant, rather than having a small window in the corner (though you can disable this).
