A mysterious wave of cyber attacks hit some 2,000 websites in Georgia, including the websites of the president, courts, and media.

The news was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the President Salome Zurabishvili’s that told AFP agency that the President’s website was “attacked by hackers this afternoon.”
According to Georgia’s Interpress news agency, the hackers targeted the websites for Georgia’s general jurisdiction courts, government agencies, NGOs and media outlets.

“Law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident,” Sopho Jajanashvili said.
According to Interpress media, the websites were defaced by the hackers that published a picture of Georgia’s exiled former president Mikheil Saakashvili with the message “I’ll be back!”.

At the time of writing, there are no other details on the attacks, for this reason it is impossible to attribute them to a threat actor.

The country of Georgia suffered a massive cyber-attack today during which over 15,000 websites were defaced and later taken offline.

Pro-Service, a local web hosting provider, has stepped forward to take the blame for the issue, admitting that a hacker breached its network and took down customer websites, effectively causing today's outage.
The web host said the attack took place early in the morning, and that by 8 pm, local time, staff had recovered more than half of the impacted sites.
TV channel Pirveli was also affected but did not go off-the-air. Some newspaper sites are still offline at the time of writing, according to some cursory checks by ZDNet.

A Pro-Service spokesperson could not be reached by phone for additional details about the attack, although the company has been updating its website periodically with new information.
