There is a new publicly available version of UnhackMe. It is still beta though. I downloaded it and it seems to be stable. There is more information and a "serious looking" dude on the website.

Very nice of Greatis to give this tool to us for free.

Grateful to them. Don't want to look the proverbial horse in the mouth!!
    Couple of questions:

?what is the difference from 2.5
?AFAICS there is little option other than the "automatic" removal of anything flagged. How could one be sure this might not be false positive.
?what is the actual removal process, deleting?renaming?wiping?reg changes?

    Thanks

Here's what it says has been changed.

    # Added detection/removal of HackTool Rootkit.
    # Added detection of Appros Adware Rootkit.
    # Fixed bugs and improved stability.

and says it now supports NT4/2000/XP(64)/2003(64)/Vista.

I have the v 3 beta 2 version. I can't update. When I click on "download" it seems to know it in that it flashes but will not download. I have tried Opera, NS, and IE. Not sure what is wrong.

Is it normal that it will scan only for 2 seconds? And I also wonder if this is really a musthave tool, I have a feeling it´s not, to be hounest. I mean it´s better to prevent rootkits (and malware in general) from loading than to cure. :)

I removed and did a clean install. The exe file needed to setup the program is within the zip file.

Yes it is looking for hidden rootkits (and keyloggers). I also use RootkitRevealer and Blacklight as on demand rootkit scanners. I use ProcessGuard (paid version) as my rootkit blocker. Whether it is a must have or not is a personal choice. I went with it. I have never found any evidence of having a rootkit on my machine. I am thinking of getting FirstDefense though to avoid a complete reformat if I ever pick up one of these nasties. Mark Russinovich picked up the Sony Rootkit from a DRM protected Sony music CD and he knows rootkits. He just installed it by accident. I am not sure if UnhackMe can really remove a rootkit (especilly Golden Hackerdefender). I just hope I never get one.

I dont think that UnhackMe is free, After 30 days evaluation period you must buy a licence to continue using it.

After the trial period, you can use it only for on-demand scan... ;)
