Terrible news as uMatrix is an extremely powerful, flexible and easy to use addon. The lack of cookie management, stricter script blocking capabilities and overall sheer granularity offered by uMatrix does not make uBlock a 1:1 replacement at all.

Looking at the comments in the article. It's kinda surprising that some people there aren't aware of uBlock Origin advance features

Anyway, uBO's hard mode is good but isn't uMatrix good. Its dynamic rules sadly support fewer request types and static can get cumbersome to set up. uMatrix is all about being able to control cookies, script, xhr, frames and other undesireables with laser focus, in just a couple of clicks. It's perfect for a strict default-deny policy.

Curiously enough, according to uBO's documentation:
"Higher granular control" sums up uMatrix niche.

i would say so. i achieved last days to get rid of ad videos on a german tv page (leading/trailing/inbetween), that was never possible with ublock. although ublock is very good (the best?) in filtering ads but I would say that firefox + umatrix (and lists) can filter a lot of ads too without really loosing functionality. 'noop' is the most attractive feature of ublock.
