It hasn't. Note that I didn't quote that part of your question. Considering that the topic of this thread is "UltimateDefrag - is this the best defragger ever?" it was just a general info that this feature of UD is not unique.

Not yet. But according to its author it should be out soon.

Hi Mantra - To be honest I doubt it in my case. I have 2 fairly empty drives. Once I moved the boot stuff closer to the edge I forgot all about it. The main benefit for me in having the boot defrag was that it allowed me to remove Perfect disk.

The thing that I like about PD is the way that I can split C: win xp and programs so that files used during the last 30 days are on the edge and everything else is archived to the center. This effectively means that I have a much smaller OS and can not harm performance.

    mantra,

You should read the pages 43-46 of the help file to understand how the offline defrag of UltimateDefrag works... ;)

    thanks
    yes i did it
i use high performance routine automatic and custom(order of folders)
so i put the file system in the exetreme let zone in the bootime defrag

after that it appears a large zone marked "reserved to MTF"
i had not such large zone in the middle of my partition 10 minutes ago , before making boottime defrag

why do you think it is messed up ?

you can impact the amount of space NTFS reserves for the MFT by editing:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

Add Value name NtfsMftZoneReservation as a type REG_DWORD and set the data value. The valid range is 1 - 4.

Value: 1 12.5% of free space, default
Value: 2 25% of free space
Value: 3 37.5% of free space
Value: 4 50% of free space

I doubt it. I am using Xp and have it set to 1
all you have to do is use Regedit and set the value to 1

    if you have a 60gb C: with 4 gb used then you would have 56 gb unused. 12.5% of 56gb = 7gb

Interesting questions but at a practical level does it matter ? if you have 54gb of data then yes but how much data do you have on C: ?

should xp resize it ? to respect the 12.5%?
after how many time or idle time , should xp resize the reserved to mft space?

Assuming that you use an imaging program, why don't you image C: and then

    using regedit go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

Add Value name NtfsMftZoneReservation as a type REG_DWORD and set the data value to 1.

The 7 gb figure should then drop to 5 gb
