I had PD installed - now removed. Although UD has given me no problems PD did fail to do an offline defrag after I had updated to the new UD but I paid no attention to that as I had often expereinced this in the past - the solution being to reinstall the last upgrade. As to Shadow Protect I don't have it installed at the moment - I prefer to make and restore images using the CD. I have installed UD on top of the old version, I have removed the old version and installed clean - no way have I been able to find any problem - except the loss of the old settings.

Well, it's down to ShadowProtect (either that or it's entirely something else). I uninstalled PD 2008 but still got the same error when I did a boot-time defrag with UD 2008.

Funny thing about the last boot-time defrag was, in addition to my C drive, I also selected my F drive (secondary internal HDD) and my G drive (external USB HDD). UD did a proper (or so it appeared) boot-time defrag on both my F and G drives and then failed on my C drive. Strange.....

I am also seeing evidence of conflict with Shadowprotect. But I think there is more to it. Will report it to them.

Agreed; I think there is more to this as well. I installed UD 2008 on my wife's desktop (XP Home - SP3) and got an error message that was entirely different than the "$LogFile" message I saw previously. The message was partially off the screen so I wasn't able to write it down but it was definitely a different message. Regardless, the boot-time defrag errored out.

FWIW, ShadowProtect is not, nor has it ever been, installed on her computer.

I just updated to v55 which was released 2 days ago. Still getting logging error on boot time defrag, plus I can't reduce the MFT file size. Problem with screen software maybe.

I do have my system on a RAID 0 drive. Maybe this is the problem.

The company behind the Windows Defragmenter in Windows XP is Executive Software, the former name of company that sells Diskeeper.

These add on defragmenters have been shown to produce zero tangible results in improving performance of the systems they are used on. All the little tricks they do don't add up to much at all.

The only real benefit for Windows XP is the ability for these programs to schedule defragging. The sad truth to that, is that you can do that yourself for free using the Windows Scheduled Tasks.

The nice thing about NTFS is that it handles being fragmented alot better than FAT16/32 did. It takes pretty bad fragmentation on a NTFS partition to start showing performance degradation, often in conjunction with a near full partition. Of course, these companies will tell you different, but the tests say otherwise.

Have you got any reply? In their autoresponse they say: "Please expect a reply within 48 hours."

Well, it's the second time that I haven't got a response for a mail asking for help regarding the issue mentioned in this post. Obviously they don't care. Never mind - I've deinstalled the software now and switched back to JKdefrag. I regret having paid for it :thumbd:

I agree that defragging is not what a lot of folks think it is. But I disagree that the only benifit is scheduling. On my computer I have a bunch of really large folders that store data and such. I hardly ever need them, but I could possibly need them sort of at a moments notice (say, during a phone call). So I would rather keep them on the disk, along with saving them on a stick. Well, with JkDefrag I can move those folders to the very back of my drive and then "ignore" them on subsequent defrags. So the very first defrag may take a while, but every defrag after that takes only a few seconds.

I can see a mechanical benefit of a defragmented drive.Given that contigious files mean less hunting across the platters, this results in less work over the lifespan of the disk.Maybe this is of only marginal benefit, but it certainly doesn't hurt it.

I echo the sentiments of some peers here. I think defrag is over-rated, atleast from most point of views. Almost all Defragments free and paid, provide good file contiguity. The difference among them is very minute to make a size able impact on most environments.

On that note, I use O&O Defrag Pro on my servers and for home I use IObit SmartDefrag. Very happy with both :thumb:
I have trialled other defraggers including UltimateDefrag, but I failed to see a BIG variation in performance to warrant their purchase.

The problem there was probably the order of items in:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
    "BootExecute"=

PD probably likes to be first in the list so reinstalling likely reset its preferred order.

I have a question for UltimateDefrag users... Since one of UD's major features is it's ability to relocate specific files on the disk, I was wondering if it can also move the MFT (to other tracks)? o_O

FYI: JKDefrag v. 4 which is near completion will have this ability, too. Quote:

It's still a bit buggy, but not only can you move the MFT,Pagefile etec to where you want it, you can shrink the size of the MFT Reserved zone. All in all pretty darn slick.

Basically can do 2 things - 1. drag and drop boot time files closer to the outer edge or further away and 2 you can change the order of the boot time files.

have found nothing buggy so far. Perhaps I'm doing somthing wrong :D ?

Yep it's that simple. By buggy it isn't working on a couple of my machines. But where it works, it's great. I've contacted support so they are working on it.

I've already done that, but the MFT hasn't moved - it still appears the same track as before! Obviously I'm missing something here, so can you be more specific? :doubt:

Open the tools>options>boot time. In the menu of items select the MFT. Then on the right slide to where you want it.

Select defrag on boot and go.
