Hackers hijack government websites to mine crypto-cash

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) took down its website after a warning that hackers were taking control of visitors' computers to mine cryptocurrency.

Security researcher Scott Helme said more than 4,000 websites, including many government ones, were affected.

He said the affected code had now been disabled and visitors were no longer at risk.

The ICO said: "We are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it."

Mr Helme said he was alerted by a friend who had received a malware warning when he visited the ICO website.

Hackers used Australian government websites to mine cryptocurrency, security researcher says

More than 4,000 websites have fallen victim to crypto-jacking — when computers are secretly made to mine cryptocurrency.

UK security researcher Scott Helme discovered the malicious software on Sunday, which he said was "definitely mining".

The compromised website plug-in responsible has now been taken offline.

Locally, websites that appear to have been affected include the Queensland Government's legislation website, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Victorian Parliament.

In the UK, websites run by the National Health System, the UK's Student Loans Company and the Northern Powergrid have also been impacted (you can see which other websites were affected here).
