Oddly, I just started up the latest beta and I don't see it.

You seem to be running v5.0.3.0.Isn't the latest beta v5.0.4.0?

I don't know what is happening. I thought I was on the 5.0.4.0 beta. I just downloaded it again from post #640 to my desktop and opened it and it still shows 5.0.3.0.

I do know that earlier I was able to see the "refresh" icon.

What am I doing wrong? Is that not the link to 5.0.4.0?

Strange. I just downloaded the latest beta from post #640, opened it and it correctly shows v5.0.4.0.

I think I figured out what was going on. I had forgotten to uninstall 5.0.3.0. When I tried to start 5.0.4.0 using the icon on my desktop, it apparently opened the installed version. Not sure how I was able to see the "refresh" icon earlier.

In any case after uninstalling 5.0.3.0, clicking on the icon on my desktop now opens 5.0.4.0.

Another SUMo refugee here... I've been testing this past weekend UCheck, UpdateStar, and QuickInstaller.
For me, they are all pretty similar in their results (not alot of portable apps for me).
They have uncovered some updates that SUMo does not, perhaps because it is phasing out.

All of the apps seem to have a problem with 3 things:
    1) Microsoft developer tool components... such as .NET Runtime, SDK, SQL Server library, etc. I use Visual Studio and the Visual Studio Installer to update VS 2017/2019/2022 and prefer to use it to keep things in that ecosystem up-to-date. Perhaps SUMo required this as well, but I ignore all of those things in UCheck
    2) Apps from Autodesk such as AutoCAD... I have many versions installed (2024 being the latest) and it always reports that AutoCAD 2019 (for instance) has an update but the new version is actually that of AutoCAD 2024. MacUpdater has a unique way of handing this, allowing the user to specify which "marketing version" to track against.
    3) Beta versions being offered as an update but not wanted (by me) in some cases. SUMo had a flag for showing beta versions that worked pretty well.

Here are my ideas for improving UCheck
    1) allow a "deep" scan that actually looks at the VERSIONINFO in the EXE's. This could be optional as it will slow things down but it is what made SUMo so great
    2) once I manually update an app, I'd like to be able to tell UCheck to "recscan" that app only. I'm surprised this is not a feature yet!
    3) Not sure why some items can't "open location"... I guess if UCheck is only scanning the registry and start menu it can't grok the location sometimes? Seems like it could be inferred most of the time?
    4) look closely at MacUpdater and try to mirror some of its features

Thanks for the work you are doing @Tigzy ... this will definitely be a better tool because you are so responsive to the users and have a new influx of users coming from SUMo!

Tigsy, I understand speed is a matter of how many users have it installed. It is just very difficult for me to understand/accept that programs like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, RoboForm, and Sandboxie would not be as popular with UCheck users as XENU's Link Sleuth. Regardless, UCheck will get it one. My hat's off to you.

You did not have to uninstall 5.0.3. You simply needed to terminate the program via the Quit option of the UCheck tray app. When you close the GUI of a UCheck production release like 5.0.3, the UCheck process continues to run in the background to handle scheduled rescans. The BETA version actually terminates the UCheck process when you exit its GUI and does not continue to run in the background.

    SUMo Status

The KC Softwares Mantis Bug Tracker/Changelog was taken offline last week.

The ability to query the SUMo DB by entering a program name from the SUMo start page was removed over this past weekend.

All product downloads on the KC Softwares web site were shut down on Tuesday, 31 Oct 2023.

The SUMo DB server appears to have been taken offline on Wednesday, 1 Nov 2023 around 1000 UTC. The "Check" function of the SUMo client requires access to the server and no longer works.

The KC Softwares Forum is expected to be available for at least a few more days according to Forum posts.

    Tigzy,

With incorporation of community feedback, Ucheck should be producing similar results to SUMo, assuming a comparable population of users. With the shutdown of the SUMo server, it is no longer possible to obtain new comparable data for SUMo, although I collected such data for the programs on my PC shortly before the server was taken offline earlier today.

Repeating a suggestion I made in post #470 back on 17 Oct 23, I strongly recommend that you implement a capability for users to query the UCheck DB to list the versions and number of users for a program. This could be implemented as a right-click option on a row on the Install tab or a separate query which allows the user to enter the program name on a form. This feature which was available in SUMo is important to figuring out errors in resolving variations in versions and program names which affect detection of updates.

As an example, I have been regularly receiving notification from UCheck of an update to PowerShell to 7.4.6.0 (which does not exist and is not a valid beta version number). The latest standard release of PowerShell is 7.3.9, 2023-10-26. The latest beta of the upcoming 7.4 release is 7.4.0-preview.6, 2023-09-28. I am on PowerShell 7.3.9. The "7.4.6.0" being reported by UCheck appears to be some incorrect normalization of the "7.4.0-preview.6" beta release version number.

    https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShell/releases

The latest usage data on PowerShell (211 total users) that I collected from SUMo was:

    7.4.0.101,beta, 5 users (2%)
    7.4.0.6, beta, 26 users (12%)
    7.4.0.5, beta, 1 user (0%)
    7.3.9.500, current, 141 users (67%)
    7.3.8.500, 33 users (16%)
    7.3.4.500, 1 user (0%)
    7.2.15.500, 3 users (1%)
    7.2.1.500, 1 user (0%)

P.S. Later this afternoon, UCheck is reporting an update to 7.4.101 (presumably 7.4.0.101 above) rather than 7.4.6. Neither is correct and I don't even see a .101 release on the PowerShell release page. Also see SUMo's post #765 below - same problem.

SUMo is dead (as the rest of KC-softwares). R.I.P.

Thank you for your work, Kyle. Fare well, stay healthy!

Is it true that UCheck uses the registry instead of the file version of executables to determine version numbers?

That seems a design flaw, since I have many false positives, mainly because Windows apparently does not update version numbers (in the registry) when an App is updated.

Example: 7-Zip is registered as 18.01 in the registry, but 23.01 on disk.

    Hi XIII:

Just an FYI that my UCheck Free Portable BETA v5.0.4.0 (download link in Tigzy's 25-Oct-2023 post # 640) correctly detects that I have the latest 7-Zip v23.01 (a Compatible app highlighted in dark blue) installed on my Win 10 laptop.

    UCheck v5_0_4_0_B BETA Correctly Detects 7_Zip v23_01 02 Nov 2023.png

    I don't know if it's relevant, but when I update 7-Zip I normally perform an over-the-top update with the full 64-bit .exe installer (e.g., 7z23xx-x64.exe) I download from https://www.7-zip.org/.

    So do I...

The only way to get UCheck properly detect 23.01 was to uninstall 7-Zip (23.01) and re-install it (23.01).

In my case the current usefulness of UCheck is only 2 more softwares (Edge and Pop Peeper) than Winget.
I am staying in Winget for now.

I would think so. I've had the latest UCheck beta installed since it was available. Today UCheck thought UCheck was v5.0.3.0!
