Canonical has announced the availability of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ‘Focal Fossa’. According to the firm, this update has a particular emphasis on security and performance. The new update uses the GNOME 3.36 desktop environment which includes a new lock screen, and there’s also an option to switch to dark mode in the Appearance tab in the settings.

In its statement, the firm said the WireGuard VPN client is installed by default and will be backported to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Commenting on the software’s inclusion in the popular Linux distribution, Jason A. Donenfeld, creator of WireGuard, said:

“Including WireGuard by default in all recent versions of Ubuntu means that users will finally have a great out-of-the-box secure tunnel on Ubuntu.”
Another subtle but big change is that the Ubuntu Software tool has been replaced with the Snap Store.

Installed Ubuntu 20.04 yesterday and all went well. However, when I tried to install GIMP using its official PPA, there are 3 unmet dependencies that Ubuntu simple said were not going to install without any reason. I have never met this issue with any previous Ubuntu versions.
This might not be because of Ubuntu 20.04 but still, I restored the computer with my Windows 10 image.

Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa, as this release is known) is a Long Term Support (LTS) release, which means Ubuntu's parent company, Canonical, will provide support through 2025. The LTS releases are what Canonical calls "enterprise grade," and these tend to be conservative when it comes to adopting new technologies.

The good news for Ubuntu fans is that 20.04 has been a fantastic release in our testing. This update has been very solid in day-to-day use, and it still manages to (optionally!) include support for some cutting-edge new features, like the beginnings of a tool to manage ZFS snapshots. There's also a major kernel bump, and considerable work has gone into improving and polishing the default Yaru theme.

There's also some good news for Raspberry Pi users, who get first-class support for the Pi 4 platform out of the box (and when I say first class, I mean, frankly, better than the official Pi distro, Raspian).

Conclusion
For the 95 percent of users who will be upgrading from 18.04 (the last LTS release), rest assured that things are about to get much, much better. Even if you leave the ZFS features for the future (as you should), the speed bumps for GNOME, improved theme and design changes, and the long-coming security improvements make Ubuntu 20.04 well worth the update.

If you're looking to upgrade mission critical servers, I suggest you hold off until the first point release, which generally arrives a month or two after a new release
Don't get me wrong, Ubuntu 20.04 is a solid release already—servers just aren't something I suggest rushing to upgrade.

Canonical has announced the release of Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS for its Desktop, Server, and Cloud products as well as other Ubuntu flavours with long-term support.
Additionally, those still running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will now be offered the upgrade inside the Update Manager. As with other point releases, Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS comes with all the latest security patches from preceding months, saving time post-installation.

The new point release means that new ISO disc images have been spun, if you download and install these you’ll have all the previous security patches pre-installed so you don’t have to spend time post-installation installing updates.

Canonical released today Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS as the third point release for its long-term supported Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) operating system series.

Coming more than six months after Ubuntu 20.04.2, the Ubuntu 20.04.3 point release is here with updated kernel and graphics stacks from the Ubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute Hippo) release. More precisely, it’s powered by the HWE (Hardware Enablement) Linux 5.11 kernel series and uses the latest Mesa 21.0 graphics stack.
As usual, the Linux 5.11 HWE kernel included in the Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS point release is intended for new installations where the hardware is not fully supported by the stock kernel.

Canonical has announced that Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS is now available for download across its Desktop, Server, and Cloud products as well as other Ubuntu spin-offs that offer long-term support. The main takeaway from this news is that updated hardware enablement stacks allow the operating system to be used on newer hardware.

If you are planning to install Ubuntu Server 20.04.4 LTS, you should be aware that it will ship with the GA kernel rather than the hardware enablement (HWE) kernel, though, you can choose to have it install the HWE kernel during the installation process if you need it for newer hardware.
