I've written a short tutorial explaining how to work around the problem of high CPU usage and slow system responsiveness in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin with Nvidia graphics card, including diagnosing the problem correctly, post-release driver updates and Sync to VBlank option. You should read this.

thanks very much for great tutorial :)

  4. Interesting... Sync-to-vblank causes performance issues on Intel GPUs (with the KMS driver) as well, in my experience.

    I don't have this with Kubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) and 295.40 drivers.
I wonder why not ? Is it only Ubuntu 12.04 ?

Adding the X Updates ppa which contains stable upstream versions of X.org drivers etc. is also a good idea. Right now it has version 295.53 of the Nvidia driver. I don't have an Nvidia card so I can't tell if the new version fixes the problem, but it's usually worth a try.

Thanks MrKvonic! I've seen lots of unsolved threads in ubuntuforums.org about this issue. I'll give them your link.

It seems to be a problem with not just Nvidia drivers. I suppose one could apply similar fixes to other graphic cards. What do you think?

    I don't know. I don't want to throw hasty words ...
I must test before I can give educated guesses ...
