Yes I switched to this filter after they stopped maintaining the extension. Now it doesn't work on Wall Street Journal site and one other one, can't recall it off-hand.

There are several filters on Filter Lists site that claim to address paywalls. Tried two of them and neither worked. So I dunno. :doubt:

That filter list has to be used together with their user script(s) to be effective.
The extension is more powerful though.

That said, you can still download the extension from GitLab:
    https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean/-/releases
    https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean/-/releases
    It will auto-update from GitLab.

In Chromium based browsers you may have to add the extension to the allowlist in policies.

    Reg files here.
    E.g. for Edge:
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\ExtensionInstallAllowlist]
    "1"="lkbebcjgcmobigpeffafkodonchffocl"
Note, that you may have to apply the .reg file again after a browser update.

In case of Firefox you don't have to go through this trouble.

    @plat
Extension still works fine on The Wall Street Journal. :)

How does one use userscript in Firefox or uBlock Origin?
I think simply importing as custom in uBlock Origin does not work.
Would one need to use an add-on like Violentmonkey to provide userscript support for Firefox?

    Yes. :)
But all that is not necessary, while GitLab is providing the .xpi for Firefox.

    Thanks very much, nicolaasjan.
Earlier, there were three Dutch newspaper sites on which I was fine with using Firefox reader view or removing cookies to read a couple of articles, but lately they changed things and it was quite annoying. That drove me to add Bypass Paywalls Clean filters to uBlock Origin. For those three sites, it works very nicely. But I noticed that for some other sites the filter does not work. If I think I truly need it, I can install the .xpi.
    Thanks again.

for userscript you need a monkey-extension. violentmonkey, greasemonkey, tampermonkey, one of those, i prefer vieolentmonkey. if you have none it may more convenient for you to install the extension from github.

but i cannot tell you which method has the better result. the monkey has advantage because you do not need to set a rule in registry.

i ever wondered that a css collection is able to bypass a paywall, know i know why not (alone).

I am trying the new version in Edge.
    I confirm my previous advice.

    I have 38323 network filters + 42140 cosmetic filters.

    Thanks Gorhill.

i would say it is breaking on the word "ads". use the logger to determine the list which is causing this.

i have similar, links with "password" in it are refused,.

I have already found the list of filters that causes this problem.
But it is very strange because it is a list of filters in Italian language.
Even a consensus rule is really problematic.

Only solution to change filter list.

    P.S.

    My current filter lists:

Usually in AMO, new versions of UBO are available with a longer delay than in Edge Store and Chrome Store.

This is completely normal as uBO is a "recommended" add-on:

As this aspect has been mentioned multiple times here I'm surprised that it comes up with nearly every update

I don't want to promote it, but impatient FF-users can install unverified addons (such as uBO 1.52) after a simple change in about:config.

Edit: as said in next post from Nicolaasjan it's not possible in all versions. And I think that's a wise thing. Now I regret that I brought up this topic.

What are my options if I want to use an unsigned add-on? (advanced users)

sorry buts thats wrong. there exist no switch in stable (not esr) and beta for this. using unsigned extensions is rather stupid if it is not for debbugging.
