µBlock, a lean and fast blocker

Call me crazy but the 'dream team' for me is uBlock on default settings with Admuncher installed. Ridiculously fast, and stops a LOT including the heuristic based Admuncher engine which stops a ton of crap.

This is my go-to combo now.

Thought I'd revisit this as I don't recall seeing any response. Any thoughts?

I tested Ad Muncher once upon a time, but was less than satisfied with the insertion of everything and your mother into the HTML source in order to hide elements through CSS.

Another 'feature' I wasn't very fond of is the tool's way of inserting itself between every application's http-based network traffic by default. Exclusions could be configured of course, but Ad Muncher was a total unknown to me at the time and its source code is not available.

Back then it made a lot of sense to use an external application to filter ads and unwanted content, because compiled code had a distinct advantage over browser extensions or userscripts. More powerful hardware and an increase in efficiency of today's JS engines have almost made that a moot point however. I was content to use Proxomitron and later on Privoxy instead of the widespread extensions like AdBlock Plus, but gorhill's focus on efficiency has made me reconsider. The idea of content filtering introduced in uBlock 0.4 is the kind of intelligent design I adore.

So what's the advantage of using Ad Muncher in combination with uBlock? Don't the two different content blockers/filters add an unneeded overhead to every webpage? Have you changed the Ad Muncher settings to alleviate that?

I would only consider that duo a viable option, if it was possible to a) disable the CSS page insertions by Ad Muncher since uBlock is clearly better suited to that task and b) if it was possible to use host-based filter-lists in Ad Muncher. Due to my lack of familiarity with the tool I don't know if either can be done.

µBlock with 3rd party frames blocked by default and some filters is all that you need, it is very safe and fast.

I am using the setup as seen here, post 696 https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/ublock-a-lean-and-fast-blocker.365273/page-28

Correction on the bottom line was mean't to read as follow re post 696:
As of right now I am only using µBlock with Dynamic filtering with FF in Sandboxie and no problems so far. Low memory and pages load fast. I guess it's up to you if you want to run noScript along with it as added protection. Personally, I'm quite satisfied with the setup the way I have it.

Totally agree. Although I am using Dynamic filtering as well.

Admuncher is written entirely in assembly, and is very speedy. But what I like is it's sort of heuristic engine for Webbugs, and the ability of it to find compromising scripts. The fact that Admuncher ignores HTTPS web pages means I can't run it exclusively, but I like the combo together, it's fast, and seem to work in tandem very well. I notice a ton of heuristic web-bug stops by Admuncher that otherwise seem to go untouched by filter based products like uBlock.

I linke ublock very much, in Chrome it is my new Standard Ad Blocker. But in Firefox I have a Problem with it. My Firefox Start Side is Speeddial within 4 News Sides. ABP is able to block Ads there, but ublock cannot do this. Is there any Possibility to configure ublock to do the same job there like ABP?

uBlock is great but even better alongside uMatrix. I'm on a Chromebook so uBlock blocking 3rd party iframes and the necessary filters alongside uMatrix giving HOST files and spoofing user-agent, referrers, hyperlink auditing etc. is amazing. Really top quality work here.

What does "side" mean? If by "side" you mean "tab", then it's just a matter of turning on uBlock for that tab. The "New tab" is whitelisted by default, just turn on uBlock while on the "New tab" tab.

umue probably meant the slides, the preview windows (thumbnails) when in Enhanced or Classic Mode for the new tab, the small "preview" windows that get generated for the most visited sites there.

Why Peter Lowe default in uBlock? Peter states on his website he is no longer supporting it.

Also - SPAM404 doesn't work in uBlock. I turn it on, and then enter specific websites on the spam404 list and they come through.

I am a regular user of Peter Lowe's ad blocking lists, but personally haven't seen any mention of Peter no longer supporting it. His list is updated several times per month. Do you have a link or quote? The reason why I ask is because I rely quite heavily on his list. Or are you possibly referring to the fact that Peter stated that he doesn't add individual subdomains to his list? That would be a concern for extension users, I imagine, but good and efficient list in particular for DNS level filtering whether it's using BIND, DNSmasq, etc.

uBlock, just like ABP, doesn't not block root documents.

the preview windows in the SpeedDial tab, how DOSawaits has described, are "adfree" when I am using ABP in Standard Configuration. By using ublock or Adguard ads are no longer blocked in the preview tab, though I switched it on at the Speeddial tab.

No such problem. Only in page https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/without-a-ngfw.374183/ the attachment has the name advert.png and advert causes ublock to activate filter /advert-
In other attachments that I try there was no problem

Yeah I noticed that, but was too busy to come back and post why it was blocking. Simple KeyWord block.

How can I download ublock for Firefox?

Update - Got it from the official site.

Is it stable version for firefox?
    Does it autoupdates for firefox?

It is not remembering options changed.
I unticked "make use of context menu"
After Firefox restart, the option is ticked again?

What ublock protects by default like ads, malware, phishing, etc... i.e what are included by dafault in ublock?

Why on Firefox addons page, quite an old version & not latest version?
