Bug bounty platform HackerOne, together with the Pentagon’s Defense Digital Service, announced on Thursday that they’ve officially launched Hack the Army 2.0.

The four-week-long challenge will allow ethical hackers to try their hands at finding vulnerabilities within more than 60 publicly accessible web assets. Find and report one, and you’ll be paid for your efforts. The opportunity is open to members of the military and government civilians, as well as individuals “invited” by HackerOne.

“Opening up the Army’s cyber terrain to the hacker community is exactly the type of outside-the-box, partnership approach we need to take to rapidly harden and better defend our most foundational weapons system: the Army network.”
The program is the second bug bounty that the Army has hosted through HackerOne. During the first, held in November and December 2016, 371 participants found 118 valid vulnerabilities and were awarded a total of around $100,000 for their discoveries.

During five weeks between October 9 and November 15, 2019, the U.S. Army was hacked by a total of 52 hackers.
Hack the Army 2.0 was a joint venture between the U.S. Department of Defense, the Defense Digital Service and the HackerOne bug bounty platform.
146 U.S. Army vulnerabilities found, $275,000 paid
There were in excess of 60 publicly accessible U.S. Army online assets that could be targeted by the hackers during the five-week challenge window.

The 52 hackers, from countries including the U.S., Canada, Germany and Romania, reported a total of 146 validated vulnerabilities in all. "The U.S. Army awarded over $275,000 (£210,500) to hackers for their efforts, with the highest single monetary award or “bounty” being $20,000 (£15,300)," according to a Business Wire report.

"Participation from hackers is key in helping the Department of Defense boost its security practices beyond basic compliance checklists to get to real security," Alex Romero, digital service expert at the Department of Defense, Defense Digital Service, said.
