Twitter is developing a new in-app system for requesting verification, according to a recent finding from reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, which Twitter has since confirmed. The discovery involves an added “Request Verification” option that appears in a redesigned account settings screen. This feature is not launched to the public, Twitter says.

Wong typically digs into Twitter and Facebook to discover features like these, making a name for herself as someone who scoops upcoming additions and changes to popular social apps before they go live.
In this case, she stumbled upon one of Twitter’s most-requested features outside of an edit button: a way to acquire the coveted blue checkmark typically reserved for public figures.

For years, Twitter’s verification system had been fairly ad hoc, which resulted in consumer confusion around what it means to be verified on its platform. The company wanted the system to convey that someone with a high-profile account is, in fact, who they say they are. But instead, the system was often perceived as one that anointed those Twitter considered “noteworthy figures.”

The checkmark came to mean a badge of honor, to sometimes disastrous results.

We reported a week ago that Twitter is working on resuming verifying users on the service, and now reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong has published some more information on the process.

It appears the process will focus much more on having a real identity rather than being notable or famous or being subject to impersonation, as has been the case previously. This is much more in line with Facebook’s Real Identity than twitter’s infamous anonymous platform.
This includes supplying a government-supplied ID, much like Facebook. Verified users will be rewarded with priority in search and enhanced reporting, which may have the effect of amplifying their voices and suppressing criticism.

Users will be able to apply to be verified once every 30 days, and it is contingent on good behaviour for the previous 3 months.

Twitter has announced today that it is officially relaunching its verification process in early 2021. The company has also unveiled a draft version of the guidelines it will use when determining whether or not to give the famous blue check mark to an account.

Twitter closed down its initial verification program in 2017 after several controversies, including multiple white supremacists being verified through the system. In 2018, Twitter promised to reopen verification to everyone, but with some significant changes. Over the summer this year, researcher Jane Manchun Wong was first to discover evidence of Twitter’s plans to relaunch the verification program.

The company has shared a draft of its new verification policy, and it’s soliciting public feedback on the details.

Twitter says that there are six types of accounts that will be eligible for verification: government officials, brands/nonprofits, news, entertainment, sports, and activists. The criteria this time around is much more detailed.

In fact, Twitter has even acknowledged that it has verified accounts in the past that do not meet these new standards. As such, it will begin to “automatically remove badges from accounts that are inactive or have incomplete profiles,” TechCrunch reports.

Twitter’s revamped verification process is launching on January 20th, 2021, bringing back the ability to request a blue checkmark after Twitter pressed pause on the formal application process for more than three years. The new policy was refined with input from tens of thousands of user responses after Twitter confirmed in November it would be relaunching verification.

Some of the new changes include more lax profile information requirements to be eligible for verification, more granular and defined categories for verification badges, and new guidelines around when a verified account may lose its blue checkmark if inactive or if found in violation of Twitter’s policies.

For human-run accounts, the company says as long as the account holder makes changes before January 20th to bring the account in line with its new verification requirements, there’s no risk of losing an existing badge.

Twitter is reserving the right to remove verification.
For users who want to apply to be verified, Twitter will launch a new “self-serve application process” within the app that will let applicants select a category for verification and confirming their identity.

Twitter is once again putting a halt on applications to its verification program, saying that it needs to work on the application and review process that lets people into the blue check mark club. This change is coming after Twitter admitted that several fake accounts, which reportedly seemed to be part of a botnet, were incorrectly verified.

If you’ve recently applied for verification, there is a chance you’ll get it — Twitter Verified has said that it’ll still be reviewing existing applications, so the freeze is just preventing new people from being able to apply. Twitter hasn’t indicated that it’ll be making changes to the criteria that it uses to deem accounts as verifiable or not. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last week, app researcher Jane Manchun Wong pointed out that Twitter is testing a new profile badge for people who have verified their phone numbers. On Tuesday, the company confirmed that it is running this experiment to “allow people to add context to their accounts.”

This could be to essentially verify that a user with the phone verification badge is not a bot. The company said this is one of the ways that help people find credible info and gives more information about different types of accounts. It added that verification is only one part of the process and it’s currently only testing the phone number verification with an opt-in setting.

Twitter already has some unique profile markers like the verified badge for notable accounts like journalists and celebrities, a label for helpful bots on the platform, and a marker for government officials and state-backed media. While these labels are applied to a limited number of accounts, a verified phone number badge could be applicable for millions of accounts.

The social media firm said that it’s taking multiple initiatives to maintain the authenticity of the conversation on the platform “by giving people more ways to identify and express themselves on Twitter and in their profiles.” However, it’s not clear if a verified phone number badge is a form of expression rather than a marker of a non-bot profile.

Twitter is now accepting signups for those who to be among the first to access the verification for organizations program. It was previously known as Blue for Business, the company said in its announcement, along with a link to the sign-up form. Organizations will have to submit their names, Twitter usernames and websites to be considered for the waitlist. They also have to indicate their size and the expected number of affiliated accounts. If you'll recall, Musk previously announced that the website will roll out a feature that will give organizations the capability to identify accounts that are actually associated with them.

This upcoming feature is meant to help address the issue and ensure that users claiming to be part of a specific organization are who they say they are.
