Twitter is making changes to address abuse and malicious automated accounts in the face of criticism it doesn't do enough to curb harassment and manipulation on its service.

The social media platform says it's seen a dramatic increase in the number of spammy or automated accounts being created each week. Last month, its machine learning tools identified nearly 10 million potentially fake or spammy accounts being created weekly, up from 3.2 million in September.

Under rules announced Tuesday, new Twitter users will be required to confirm either an email address or phone number when signing up for an account. [...] also plans to reduce the visibility of spammy accounts by removing them from follower figures.

Data obtained by the Post shows more than 70 million Twitter accounts were suspended in May and June, and the company has continued to crack down at that rate into July.

In response to a request for comment, Twitter directed CNET to a blog post from last week that says, in part, that Twitter is "now removing 214 percent more accounts for violating our spam policies on a year-on-year basis." The company also said the average number of spam reports it's received dropped from around 25,000 a day in March to around 17,000 a day in May. New protections "have already helped us prevent more than 50,000 spammy sign-ups per day," the post reads.

That Twitter could ban 1 million accounts per day for several months, with no end in sight, suggests that the obstacle is no longer just a lack of will or resources. Rather, the problem is structural: No matter how many accounts Twitter suspends, the people creating them can always make more.

Its chief financial officer, Ned Segal, said in response to the Post article that the company now catches many fake accounts as soon as they sign up, and many others within their first 30 days. So the majority of the million accounts per day that it’s suspending were never counted among its active users.

The main problem is Twitter’s fundamental structure. And when that time comes, we’ll have to either accept a certain level of sketchiness as the price of a global public square or demand that Twitter change its core workings and become more like Facebook, which requires most users to go by their real names. It’s not going to be an easy choice.

In fact, the paper's two researchers write that with a machine learning approach they developed themselves, they could identify abusive accounts in far greater volumes and faster than Twitter does—often flagging the accounts months before Twitter spotted and banned them.

In an 16-month study of 1.5 billion tweets, Zubair Shafiq [...] identified more than 167,000 apps using Twitter's API to automate bot accounts that spread tens of millions of tweets pushing spam, links to malware, and astroturfing campaigns.

"They’ve said they’re now taking this problem seriously and implementing a lot of countermeasures. The takeaway is that these countermeasures didn’t have a substantial impact on these applications that are responsible for millions and millions of abusive tweets."

Twitter is making changes to its platform to make tweeting less anxiety fraught for users. As per Mashable, the firm wants to improve what it dubs as conversational health on the platform. Essentially, Twitter is adding a new set of options that will let you choose who can reply to your tweet before sending it.

Twitter calls this feature "conversation dynamics." With this, you'll be able to take control of how your tweet is disseminated across the platform, limiting it to one of four classes of users.
While everyone would still be able to quote tweet the account should it be public, this feature would keep the main reply thread under control. Twitter says it'll be testing it later this year in select markets.

Not all bots are bad, but all bots need labels: those are Twitter's latest rules for bot accounts that don't want to risk getting booted off the platform. The change was made as part of the company's updated developer policy, which lays out a new policy for accounts that want to use Twitter's developer tools to post automatically.
Under the new terms, developers must "clearly indicate," if an account is a bot account, as well as the identity of the person running the account.

The automated accounts are frequently used to spread spam and are favored tools of trolls looking to manipulate conversations or harass other Twitter users.

The tool, named BotSight, is currently available for Chrome, Chromium-based Brave, and Firefox for users in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Its developers also plan on creating a smartphone app and a version that works with Microsoft Edge.

NortonLifeLock says BotSight, which it describes as a research prototype, uses a machine learning model to detect Twitter bots with a high degree of accuracy, including in tweets displayed in the user’s timeline, search and trending topics. It analyzes more than 20 features to determine if a Twitter account is a bot, including the account name and description, and its follower increase rate.
When users install the BotSight extension, they will see a percentage and a green, yellow or red icon next to the name of each profile, including ones mentioned in a tweet.

The company has so far analyzed more than 100,000 accounts and found that roughly 5% of tweets are posted by bots.

“In our analysis of recent coronavirus-related tweets, we found that between 6-18% of users tweeting on this subject were bots, depending on which time period we sampled, while a random sample of the Twitter stream indicates 4-8% bot activity by volume over the same time period. Twitter today acknowledged that it has begun testing a new setting that lets users limit who can reply to tweets. The setting was first noted earlier this year. Similar to Facebook’s post view settings, the current implementation features a small glove icon in the corner. Tapping on it brings up a “Who Can Reply?” window.

From there, users can pick from one of three options: Everyone, People You Follow and Only People You Mention. If you opt for either of the latter, the reply function will be greyed out for all who don’t fit the description. They can view, like and retweet the thing, but they won’t be able to reply directly to the sender. The thread itself will also acknowledge that replies are limited.

Because it’s in testing mode, there’s no guarantee that this will become a universal feature, but Twitter says the rollout is designed to “give people more opportunities to weigh in while still giving people control over the conversations they start.”

Anyone and everyone can reply directly to a tweet — and that’s not always ideal for the sender. Replies can often devolve into a sea of abusive responses, regardless of subject matter. Until now, the only way to limit them was to lock an account.
It’s clear the issue has become a top priority for the service in recent years. Reaction so far is…mixed. At least judging from the replies to the tweet announcing the new feature.

By choosing the last option and not mentioning anyone, users are effectively turning off all replies.
The change is designed to address the platform’s long-running troll problem.

The other potential problem with limited tweets is how its use might affect public figures. Back in 2017, Columbia University's Knight First Amendment Institute sued Donald Trump for blocking Twitter users, and the Court of Appeals last year upheld a ruling against the president, saying that the action was a violation of people’s First Amendment rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says public officials using the reply-limiting feature would be violating users’ freedom of speech in the same way that blocking them does.

“As a general matter, Twitter’s investment in user controls is a good thing. But public officials would be violating the First Amendment if they were to use this tool to block speakers on any accounts they’ve opened up for public conversation in their roles as government actors. Deciding who can reply to which tweet on a tweet-by-tweet basis could change how some people use the social media platform in significant ways.

Meet the Press announced an interview with NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell and only allowed people it tagged in the tweet to reply — which, in this case, was only Mitchell. What followed almost felt like a long tweetstorm, split between two accounts.
Still, the limitation means interviews may not feel quite as organic as they sometimes were before.

There are bound to be new ideas that emerge as more Twitter users get access to reply blocking, and I’m interested to see how people use the feature in creative ways.

The tweets are then handed to human workers for review, in a process that Dorsey said should ease the burden on people who receive harassing messages on the platform, since they won’t have to manually report as many offensive messages.

“We have made some pretty important strides,” Dorsey said Thursday in a video interview with Fast Company editor-in-chief Stephanie Mehta at Procter & Gamble’s Signal conference.
“Just two years ago, the only way we would understand if an account was being harassing or abusive was if someone reported it, which is fundamentally not fair because it’s putting all the burden on the victim.”

“In May, we tested a new way to have a chat with exactly who you want, so you can create and consume more meaningful changes,” says the update text on the App Store. “Now, everyone can try this new feature and choose who can reply to their tweets.”
To use the feature, users simply tap a box above the keyboard when composing a tweet that says “Everyone can reply.” They can then choose between three options: everyone can reply to their tweet, only people they follow can reply, and only people they mention can reply. Choosing one option doesn’t make that the default for future tweets.

A thematic review of this situation is offered by a team from India in the International Journal of Internet Technology and Secured Transactions.

Rosario Gilmary, Akila Venkatesan, and Govindasamy Vaiyapuri of Pondicherry Engineering College explain how Twitter bots exploit the service's API (application programming interface) to carry out tasks such as "mentions," "likes," "retweets," and posting updates themselves often exploiting trending topics and "hashtags.
Some bots are created for entirely innocent purposes by users but often the bots are created to artificially boost or denigrate the activity of other, legitimate accounts, to spread disinformation, propaganda and other problematic content, and even to spread malware through phishing links embedded in a tweet.

The team reports that between 9 and 15 percent of Twitter accounts are estimated to be social bots. Worryingly, those who control these bots are well aware of the current detection techniques and evolve better camouflage for their activities in response to defensive measures taken by users and the service provider.

In the future, those tools could include a feature that lets you filter potentially offensive replies and another that lets you limit potentially unwelcome accounts from replying. Twitter Senior Product Designer Paula Barcante has released a sneak peek of the features, which are merely concepts at the moment, to seek input from users.

Barcante says Twitter will ask you if you'd like to switch on those controls if it detects potentially harmful replies to your tweets.
If you decide to limit unwelcome accounts, users who've recently shown patterns of breaking rules won't be able to reply to your tweets at all.

All Twitter users can now remove a follower without having to block them. The company started testing this option last month, and starting today, everyone will have access to it. To quietly stop someone from seeing your tweets in their feed, go to the Followers tab on your profile, click the three-dot menu next to the user in question and select the "Remove this follower" option.

This is part of Twitter's efforts to reduce harassment on the platform. Blocking someone you don't want to follow you could lead to retaliation from that person via their allies or their secondary accounts after they find out. Cutting them in this fashion and muting them will mean they're none the wiser that they're out of the loop.

Soft-blocking, or removing a follower, does just that. It removes the user from the list of followers and that means that the removed user won't receive notifications anymore when you post on Twitter. Nothing is keeping the user from following the account again, however.

Soft-blocking is not effective against harassing or stalking Twitter users, unless they pay little attention to their status. Blocking is the only effective option to make sure that contact is not possible anymore on the site (with the blocked account).

Twitter, possibly more than other social platforms, seems to bring out the very worst in many people. Apparently magnifying the emboldening effect the relative anonymity of posting online brings, users often find that responses to their tweets stray a long way from what most would consider reasonable. Now Twitter is working on a solution.

Spotted in the code of the Twitter app, an upcoming "Reply filter" feature will give users the ability to control the type of response they see. Importantly, the feature does not introduce any new restrictions on what others are able to post as a reply; it just gives users the opportunity to avoid exposing themselves to upsetting responses by filtering them.

Replies to your Tweets that contain potentially harmful or offensive language will be filtered and appear here. Others can still see these replies.
Keep in mind we use technology to help use identify such replies, so while we're always improving, we may not get it right all the time.

It is important to note that the filtering function does not stop someone from posting anything they want in reply to a tweet -- assuming, of course, that it does not violate Twitter's terms of use. What it does means, however is that the author of the original post will not be exposed to content they may not want to see; they can still manually seek it out if they want.

Twitter has confirmed it will now offer the “Twitter Circle” feature to all its users across the globe. The feature will essentially allow Twitter users to have better control over who sees (and can respond) their Tweets.

Twitter has been testing Twitter Circle for over four months. Moving forward, it will be available to every user. It allows users to set up groups (or “Circles”) of up to 150 friends or colleagues who follow them. Whenever a Tweet is created with the Twitter Circle option selected, only those who are within the pre-selected group will be able to see it.

Even if some users follow a Twitter account, the tweet, meant for circulation within a Circle, will remain invisible to them. Accounts not part of the Twitter Circle won’t be able to see, respond, like, or take any other action on the Tweet. These rules will remain effective regardless of the public/private settings of the originating account.

Twitter claims Twitter Circle will help create an environment of security. A tweet circulated to a small audience should help Twitter users express themselves without fear of harassment or bullying.

Additionally, Twitter doesn’t allow users to leave a Circle. In order to leave the Circle, users will have to block the person who created it. This seems way too harsh a step merely to stop being a part of a Circle.
