Just recently I've had call for help to troubleshoot a Windows startup problem.

To cut along story short...good tip coming...there is one hidden setting that I always switch on or add a new DWORD value to the registry if needed to all my xp and server machines - verbose startup/shutdown status messages...

    [Open regedit>goto> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\System

At the rightside pane create a new DWORD value (or modify if already there) VerboseStatus and set its value to 1.
    (0 to disable)]

    The reason I'm posting...

The user wasn't really up to poking around the registry yet. What good and simple programs are available in changing windows (disable/enable type/hardening/see above example) to help those that are unfamiliar with the registry or simply will just save an experienced user some time?

Thanks for any suggestions and hope you like the tip...below shows SAS component loading at Welcome Screen:)

    Hi Meriadoc

I've always found What's Running to be a very useful and free app.

Was it xp-AntiSpy? It is mainly a security "hardener" to disable vulnerable services. If you need a really comprehensive tweaker, look no further than x-setup pro.

Yes that's it thanks and of course I forgot all about the TweakUI power toy from MS as I've just been reminded from another thread.

    X-Setup Pro is excellent.

For a network, turning recording on and making a reg file on the fly which can then be deployed to any number of machines to change a setting and without having to install on every machine finally sold x-setup pro to me. I've also read it has the settings to add xp home to a domain.

    Hi

Was that directed at me? If it was, I found version 6, but have not had time to install it yet.

    Thanks
