if ESET or KAV team are seeing this topic perhaps they'll react in a way or in other.... btw, in Romania, 1 year ago NOD32 was also unheared but now it started to be more and more used. It was not promoted too much in magazines or media, but by forums and from one friend to another. But, unfortunately ESET's sales dunno how much have increased here because many of them are using cracked versions....

I think... globally, it's Norton and AVG tops the lists, not unless many ordinary pc users started to visit forums like this and see anti-virus ratings. :D

Norton was bundled free with when buying some brands of motherboards, and AVG is probably one of the most popular free anti-virus anywhere. Well, just like the well known free Spybot S & D anti-spyware... and the free Zone Alarm firewall. They are very popular especially in thirld world countries...beginning to make pc internet incorporating it into their daily life. :cautious:

To be honest, I doubt the average home user knows enough about anitivirus products to have even heard of AVG in the US unless they have a saavy relative or had their PC worked on, not wanting to renew their 90 day trial.

I'd say atleast 3/4 of the OEM systems I get at the office have a trial or full version of Norton/McAfee and never activated it, renewed it, ran a scan or updated the definitions. The US is in a very sad, uninformed state when it comes to properly protecting their computers. :(

In China, I think NOD, Kaspersky and McAfee are "advanced" users' chosing only. Most of Chinese use like kingsoft, rising or jiangmin (both of them is "Made in China").

    In Canada I would say:

    Norton³
    McAfee
    AVG

NOD32, Kaspersky, F-Secure, F-Prot, Trend and others are foriegn to most people.

    Can I say...

    Norton
    McAfee
    AVG
    Trend Micro

These 4 brands are the most used/known antivirus software in the world.

Best Buy stores in Texas, don't know about the rest, seem to have a good amount of the ZoneAlarm Suites So ComputerAssociates for that AV there.

    In Hong Kong,

    (1) Norton
    (2) Norton
    (3) Norton
    (4) Norton
    .
    .
    (100) Norton
    (101) McAfee

Norton is the most well-known AV in HK because it is the most widely pirated antivirus software in HK. People in HK don't like NOD32 or KAV because it is not easy to find a pirated key, even though buying a 3 year license for NOD32 cost US$48 only and a two year license of KAV cost US$37 only (HK promotion price).

What is the number one criteria of choosing an AV in HK?
Ease of finding (a pirated one)!!!
They even don't bother to see which has the best detection rate. :(
Sometimes, people even post a thread in the HK newsgroup and ask which AV is the most user friendly!!! :(
Only very limited people know about BitDefender, F-PROT, Norman and Sophos because cracked version of these AV are rare.

China is one of the highest sources of pirated software isn't it? Maybe it was Pakistan? :p

    Reminds me of Shanijee :p

I myself used licensed software but my friends simply say: you are wasting money and you are crazy. Why buy a license when pirated ones are freely available? :(

Problem is that there are many people who can't effort to buy licenses. Let's face it, many people in Russia earn around $100 (or less!) a month...
Personally I think companies should cut the prices for this regions way more. But that's wishfull thinking. Open-source is our future ;)

In HK, the situation is different. People are willing to pay for new mobile phones which cost about US$250-400, or monthly fee of US$15 for mobile phone calls, but are reluctant to buy a 3 year license for NOD32 which cost US$48 only!!! People in HK simply take it for granted that pirated software can be easily available, so why bother to buy a license? They post threads in the newsgroup asking for cracked version of NOD32 every now and then, or asking for pirated keys of KAV.

Sometimes, they even ask for pirated copies of a Chinese Input software which only cost US$6.42.

That's a sad situation. Personally I can't effort myself to pay software licenses, I work full time and need to pay rent for my appartment (where I live in the weekend) and for my girlfriends study. With incomes around $100 a month such things very tight. I'm not complaining though, for my age I earn a lot of money here in the army :D

Back to the subject. Pirated software is bad, I agree on this. However if you use a pirated copy of software you only use once on a couple of months, then I can understand. And for poor regions I also understand, people just can't effort it! But software you use on a daily base you should pay, especially if your financial position allows this...

I could understand the situation in some countries where people are not earning too much, and some of the software are quite expensive, especially that from Microsoft and Adobe. But people in HK are not that poor. Most are willing to spend a lot for entertainment, singing karaoke, or having holiday trips to other countries. One of my friend is willing to buy a jeans for US$200 but he is reluctant to spend just $20 for an annual antivirus software license. Is that reasonable? He even asked me to give my User ID and password of my NOD32 license to him. I say NO and he said that I was selfish. Using licensed software without sharing my license is selfish. Huh!!! I really don't know what he think. He is earning US$2,500 a month!!! Even my another friend who earns US$10,000 per month asked me for serial number or registration code of software costing only $20!!!

    You are not alone.

As far as I know, in Thailand, NOD32 one year license is only US$ 6.25 (home user license), it can be purchased in many book stores almost everywhere in the country. But I've seen so many people still don't want to buy it, they ask/use for cracks, keygens and pirated version of NOD32.

Most of home users use Norton and McAfee that pre-installed when they buy computers, when it expired, some uses pirated version of Norton and McAfee and some goes to free AV such as avast! Home Edition and AVG Free.

    Only 6$?
In Romania we can hardly get 200$/month sallary and 50$ /license is really too much for an antivirus. :(

A lot of computer users spend thousands of whatever currency to have a flashing system with everything in and on it, but wouldn't dare to spend a few bucks on 'the very important' security part.
It amazes me all the time!

I'm not one of those spending money making their PC the best and these "few" moneys represent 1/4 of our sallarys, while in the US, France, etc is 1/20. ;)

Simply because hardware cannot be downloaded. But pirated software can be downloaded anywhere.

So the most pirated AV would be the top AV in the country, because many people can find it and use it for free.
