    No particular order.

    2. Firefox/Noscript/Better Privacy
    12. hdparm -When I need to wipe it all in the shortest time possible, also details.
2.2. PokerStars - I must be the best, am I sick or what. Who gonna call that!
    6. Live CD - Knoppix cuz you can run it with out the CD, toram. Try that with Ubuntu LCD.
    3. Google - Though I don't utilize it to it's full potential.
    1. Coffee cup - Most necessary of all tools!

    Is very reduntant. Slow. Expensive.

FreeNAS may be a better tool, IMO.

The above makes sure I have full back ups of everything.
    For entertainment/email/ browsing:
Firefox & Thunderbird & Winamp & Any DVD & DVD Shrink & dBPowerAmp Music Converter & Windows 7
Oh and my Qnap NAS box & Windows Home Server & my SqueezeBox/ SqueezeServer & my Popcorn Hour

    Bingo!

Windows Home Server and Apple Time Capsule (one for each son at school since they're Mac based) have already proven to be the most useful purchases I've made over the past few years. These are now genuinely "can't live without" components.

I really would not say there's any software I can't live without, but I would probably moan a lot. That said, within reason, I would have a very difficult time parting from the following:

Linux, Windows combined, any which way:

    Firefox
    LyX
    Notepad++
    IrfanView
    FileZilla
    xterm
    rsync
    aptitude
    strace
    TrueCrypt
    Acronis True Image
    Karen's Replicator
    Google SketchUp
    DOSbox
    CloneZilla

    That's it, I think ...

    Cheers,
    Mrk

For me, it's the Acronis True Image v.11 rescue CD. Makes images and restores images flawlessly (so far) at boot up. It has saved me many hours of cleanup and frustration. My cardinal rule is ALWAYS have a clean offline image - ALWAYS!

Directory Opus, Notepad++, CuteFTP, FireFox with Addons and Putty.

I can pay my rent with those, then add on NIS2010 and Malware Defender to keep things safe.

Since most posters totally disregarded this, I will do that as well -
I can live without security software. In this category, I use only firewall (a 3rd party, Look'n'Stop, but I could live with Win default one). No AV, no HIPS, sandbox or other mumbo-jumbo.

Literally speaking, a software I can't live without is Adobe Suite (Ps, Il, Id) as this thing puts food on my table. I do most of my work at home, and I NEED to have it. There are other tools that aid here, but this trio I can't literally live without.

Figuratively speaking, the only software I can't live without is Winamp. Not because it's so good (and it is very good), but because of it's plugins support. I listen to music exclusively through my PC, use Winamp and iZotope Ozone sound processor, have very large and expensive speakers (stereo). It is a VST version of iZotope, not DSP, though DSP is not bad either.

This sound processor is so awesome, that I can't imagine listening to music without it anymore. It redefines the term. I simply cannot use a player that won't work with VST plugins. For anyone interested and with a decent home sound system, you should really try it (Unfortunately, fully funcional trial is 10 days only, and it costs 250 bucks). I have never heard anything similar in my life. There are other DSP/VST plugins, but compared to Ozone, they are simply laughable.

I understand that for most people, these things are overkill, but to me it is a must have. Yes, I am a deranged audio freak.

Looking through installed software on my machines, I really can't think of anything else I can't live without. All other apps are easily replaceable.

    Cheers all.

An operating system with a browser, and an internet connection.
There are much more important things in my life that I'd hold up higher in the "can't live without" besides computer stuff.

On the other hand, I think you can make a cogent case for using the intrinsic configurability of the OS as a base security solution, and against that backdrop, tools such as Windows Home Server/Apple Time Machine-Time Capsule/or your preferred archiving solution are increasingly essential and the reasons are decoupled from security considerations.

The need for these tools is a reflection of the increasing shift from physical to electronic assets in many areas of entertainment (music, video, books) and personal life (personal photos, professional work product, financial records, etc.).

I know..., but I have a certain loquaciousness that I need to fulfill :)

In any event, it's interesting looking at the splits by application category.
