    Always VPN only for me.

    Best way to go. I always run through my VPN. One thing to make sure is check to see if your VPN is connected or even have internet drop out if it disconnects. If an attacker is running a MITM attack (ARP poisoning for example) they can block ports too. They can easily block VPN ports or any port but 80 and 443.

    An attack I witnessed was getting blocking outbound VPN ports, waiting for the users connection to fail and then (since most users do this) wait for them to continue browsing without protection.

    I don't use Public Wi-Fi, but if I did I would use a VPN.
