Financial Times sources claim ByteDance is planning an on-demand streaming music service with, as you might expect, a social media hook. The app would reportedly include a collection of short, searchable video clips you could sync to songs and share with your friends.
It's also set to cost less than the $10 per month Spotify, Apple and others typically charge for their all-you-can-stream offerings.

ByteDance is said to still be in talks with Sony, Universal and Warner to license their music catalogs for the service. However, it might arrive sooner than you think. It's believed to be launching as early as December in countries like Brazil, India and Indonesia. Service in the US is also coming, the sources said, although it wouldn't be ready until sometime later.

TikTok users will soon be able to choose from a huge variety of independent music to accompany their videos. Merlin, a digital rights agency for indie record labels, has signed a global partnership with the app, bringing music from labels like Epitaph and Sub Pop to TikTok's library.

According to TechCrunch, the deal is also part of TikTok's rumored music streaming service, Resso, which is meant to compete with the likes of Spotify.

TechCrunch: TikTok inks licensing deal with Merlin to use music from independent labels in videos and new Resso streaming service

Specifically, a source close to TikTok has confirmed to TechCrunch that licensing deal covers its upcoming music subscription service Resso.

Resso was long rumoured and eventually spotted in the wild at the end of last year when Bytedance tested the app in India and Indonesia. Bytedance owns the Resso trademark, so it’s a good bet that it will make its way to other markets soon.
A music streaming app, which TikTok has reportedly been gearing up to launch for some time, is one way that the company could help generate revenue.

TikTok, the hugely popular social media app, found a lot of early traction by giving users a way to create funny lip-synced versions of clips [...] Now at long last, TikTok’s owner, China’s ByteDance, is doubling down on the music connection with the release of its first standalone full music streaming app, starting first in India.

Today, the company is launching Resso, which describes itself as a “social music streaming app”: users are encouraged to share lyrics, comments and other user-generated content with each other, alongside full-length tracks of music that they can consume and also share with others. And the music begins to auto-play as soon as you open the app.
Resso is not disclosing how many tracks are on the service at launch, but it notes that it has secured licensing deals with Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Merlin and Beggars Group, as well as big publishers specifically in the Indian market [...]

Unlike its sister app TikTok, which is free to use and is built on an ad-based model, Resso is following the freemium route that a number of other big music apps, such as Spotify, have taken.

A free tier includes ads and limits streaming quality to 128 kbps; a premium, ad-free tier boosts streaming to 256 kbps, includes downloads and the ability to skip tracks and costs INR 99/month ($1.35/month) on Android and INR 119/month ($1.62) on iOS.
The launch comes about two months after Resso opened up for testing in two markets, India and Indonesia (it remains in test mode in the latter)

“India has the largest population of GenZ as compared to any other country globally,” Hari Nair, Head of Music Content & Partnership, Resso India, told TechCrunch. “With the core of Resso’s target audience being GenZ, it is only logical for Resso to make its debut in India. We will discuss additional markets when appropriate.”

When India banned 59 Chinese apps at the end of June, one dodged the bullet: Resso
Owned by TikTok’s parent firm ByteDance, social music-streaming app Resso launched in India in March this year after several months of test runs.

Between January and June, its installs have skyrocketed, touching 3 million last month, data from market intelligence platform SensorTower show.
However, the firm is still signing deals for office spaces with WeWork. The enthusiasm may be stemming from Resso’s success.

TikTok Music could mean competition for Apple Music and Spotify

TikTok Music could be Apple Music and Spotify’s latest competitor, as TikTok’s parent company ByteDance just filed a trademark application for its possible music streaming service in the United States.

First spotted by Business Insider, this could mean that the social media giant could be readying to compete with Apple Music and Spotify in the near future.
As mentioned by the publication, TikTok is already a hub for discovering new music. In addition, it helps turn songs into the mainstream and to the top of charts like Billboard 100, Spotify Viral 50, and Apple Music curated playlists.

The TikTok Music trademark was submitted in the US in May. It could be used for “a variety of goods and services including a mobile app that would allow users to purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics.”

Other possible use cases for “TikTok Music” in ByteDance’s application include an app that would allow users to “live stream audio and video” as well as the ability to “edit and upload photographs as the cover of playlists” and “comment on music, songs, and albums.”
