You have the option to enable telemetry, which is disabled by default.

Beginning with version 7, Thunderbird includes functionality that is turned off by default to send to Mozilla non-personal usage, performance, and responsiveness statistics about user interface features, memory, and hardware configuration. The only Potentially Personal Information sent to Mozilla when this functionality has been enabled is IP addresses. Usage statistics are transmitted using SSL (a method of protecting data in transit) and help us improve future versions of Thunderbird. Once sent to Mozilla, usage statistics are stored in an aggregate form and made available to a broad range of developers, including both Mozilla employees and public contributors. Once this functionality is enabled, users can disable it in Thunderbird’s Options/Preferences. Simply deselect the "Submit performance data" item.

First the good news: Thunderbird won't drop legacy add-on support (just yet). The stable version of the email client is version 52.5.0 at the time of writing, the next major release probably Thunderbird 59.0 or 60.0 if Thunderbird follows Mozilla in postponing the next ESR release.

Closing Words
Thunderbird is not dead; that is a good thing. Development continues and it is a good thing that support for legacy add-ons remains a thing, at least for the foreseeable future.

I just used the auto-updater in Thunderbird to update itself to v52.6.0 successfully. Also the download for this release is OUT THERE on the production Mozilla servers.

Thunderbird 60 comes with a refreshed user interface and plenty of other changes. Thunderbird users who run extensions in the email client may face compatibility issues as Thunderbird uses a strict compatibility policy when it comes to extensions.
In plain English: any extension that is not explicitly compatible with Thunderbird 60 will be disabled. Attempts to install incompatible Thunderbird extensions are blocked and users get the "could not be installed because it is not compatible with Thunderbird" error message.

The change is disastrous for Thunderbird's extension ecosystem. If you check the first two pages of extensions that have the most users on the Thunderbird Add-ons site, you will find out that only eight of the 40 Thunderbird extensions with the most users are compatible at this point in time.

The situation is even worse for the top 40 add-ons with the highest ratings as only five of them are compatible with Thunderbird 60.
[...] There is a way out, however, at this point in time. The Thunderbird development team added an option to opt-out of the strict extension compatible checking enforcement.

Until Thunderbird 52.8 and 52.8.1 are released with fixes:

Keep remote content disabled in Thunderbird (the default) is advisable as it should mitigate the described attack vector.

Do not use the “allow now” option that pops up when remote content is encountered in your encrypted Emails.
