OH, Now come' on. Thunderbird is OPEN SOURCE, it is served upon a platter for you. I am security specialist with certification. I am also a app developer. If I had you open source code and Thunderbird open source code, it would be a snap. Do you want to give me your code and I will fix it for you. Don't lead the blind off a cliff, and remember, someone might just be checking in that knows the score. If you can integrate with Microsoft 2010, then Thunderbird would be a breeze. I think I speak for all concerned, we made a decision to purchase ESET based on claims of customer support and quick updates. This issue with Thunderbird just doesn't seem to be important.

Like I said, if you think it is not trivial, you have my contact info send me your code. Lack of doing so is an admission of apathy about this issue.

I"m a Thunderbird user, since 2007. I realize that Thunderbird is not an enterprise e-mail application, unlike MS Outlook. That makes it less important to work on Thunderbird compatibility than on Outlook compatibility. I once used Eudora. Eudora never was fully integrated with NOD32, but the chance to do that is long gone, I think. These are my opinions, so if ESET wants to say something different, they are welcome to do it. I'm just saying that ESET probably has to prioritize their projects.

While I can understand your frustration you will have to admit that Thunderbird has recently become a somewhat rapidly moving target.

The Mozilla corp seems to have developed a sudden "love" for Thunderbird and is churning out new releases at an unsound rate (and in my humble opinion not only to the better). Just look at the bug-list of the 3.0.x versions and you will have to agree, these should never have seen the light of day.

So, the point I am trying to make is: It is really frustrating to constantly have to upgrade a software product because a third party doesn't seem to be able to do their coding right in the first place.
Meaning: You could just as easily off-load your grudge on the Mozilla development team that keeps showering us with "public betas".

    just my 2¢

public betas? Just to add I have never had a single problem ever with any version of thunderbird. Windows live mail loads, windows mail loads. + it's free :)
mozilla programs on this pc are and have always been rock solid.

Will this be for all the various builds of Thunderbird 3.1 Marcos. By that I mean 3.1.1, 3.1.2 etc?

    Hello,

It can be difficult for a software developer who makes Program A to tell if compatibility with Program B from another developer will be maintained in future versions because the author of Program B could make significant changes that affect Program A's ability to interoperate with Program B.

That said, let's hope that the developers of Thunderbird do not make any siginificant changes to it which impact ESET or any other developer of plugins.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky

sorry for this slightly off-topic "warm-up" of this thread.

It's good, you are happy with Thunderbird.

Well, I am not. At least not any more:
I do not like the direction Mozilla Corp is taking with Thunderbird. They are rapidly turning a once rock-solid lean and mean mail client into another glitzy shiny wobbly resource gobbling "look at me" piece of c**p.

I've recently stumbled upon this article, which summarizes my gripes with Thunderbird 3.x exactly!

For me too, TB 2.x presently is the least "obnoxious" mail client and therefore stays on my systems. However, should anything leaner appear on the horizon, it's "bye bye Mozilla Thunderbird" for me.

/ot myself used TB 1.5 as the last product - i never upgrade to v2 as that build
dont fit my needs and it was awful to look at. from your words i deduce that
v3 is worser than v2. also to mention the still happening loss of mails and total
accounts. one of the reasons using TB with IMAP instead POP3.
IMAP was the only reason here for me - faster than Becky! And never any
loss of mails... even they would offer money - if mails are lost - unpayable

Yea, Team! The latest NOD32 v 4.2.64.12 successfully integrates with Thunderbird 3.1.2.

It does indeed, except that we still have that slightly ridiculous 'real estate eating', full screen width tool-bar! Wish Eset could tidy this up somehow, perhaps with a 'button' that could be added to the existing tool-bar.

Well, you can just disable display of the Eset toolbar (see View, Toolbars). I don't actually use the Eset toolbar when in Thunderbird and it is easy enough to re-enable the display if desired. The toolbar doesn't have to be displayed for the software to work. Even with the Eset toolbar disabled, you still have a selection in the Message pane for Eset NOD32 Antivirus to rescan messages (if there are any messages in the folder).

Sure, accepted, I was just being picky as far as the 'GUI' aspect is concerned (part of my job is being picky about such things! ;) )

That's fair. Eset might be able to add NOD32 to the tools menu, or maybe configuration could be permitted via the Add-ons list. The "options" button is grayed-out in the list, so nothing can be set there. It seems to me that there might be other ways to do it, but perhaps the current toolbar is about the best that can be done within Thunderbird.

Well I just upraded from Eset Smart Security 4.0.474 to 4.2.67.10 and Eudora OSE 1.0 now crashes whenever I try to open a mail. I had to disable both the Eset email client protection AND the antispam protection in order for Eudora OSE to stop crashing.
Anybody else get the same problem ?

I can't stay like this, so will either need to go back to 4.0.474 or find a solution in the configuration parameters, if there is one.

I've just installed Eudora OSE - more out of curiosity than anything as I didn't think Eudora was still around! It was my first ever email client in 1994! At first sight it looks like Thunderbird, so I guess it's the same codebase.

I sent myself a test email from an external source and Eudora crashed for me. I'm using ESET 4.2.67.10.

As it's Eudora that crashes, my guess is that it's not handling the scanning which ESET does, so I'd suggest that the fault lies with Eudora. ESET *may* be involved, but Eudora should be a bit more resilient and robust.

As Eudora looks to be pretty much identical to Thunderbird you might have more luck with that. I would bet that Thunderbird is much more widely used than Eudora, and certain ESET has specific support for it. I know it doesn't solve your issue but it probably gives you a viable workaround.

Since Eudora is not supported and EAV/ESS do not integrate into it, the crash cannot be caused by ESET. POP3 email is scanned before it's downloaded by Eudora. There's no interaction between the two whatsoever.
Doesn't the crash occur with ESET uninstalled?

Yeah I thought as much. My guess is that it's an issue within Eudora.

I only installed Eudora to see if I could replicate the problem to help ergonom, and I've now uninstalled it.

Replying to my own thread, I know....I also talk to myself in the shower :)

If I disable ESET altogether, Eudora works fine, no crashes. Enable ESET, Eudora crashes every time. If I disable POP3 protocol checking, it still crashes. The only way I can get ESET and Eudora to work together is with the boxes ticked as shown (exclude the sent box, I didn't try sending). If the first or last box is ticked, Eudora crashes when checking or reading, as appropriate.

I don't use Eudora, I'm just trying to help the forum. I like everyone to have working systems.

    Jim

PS Edit: Unticking the "scan pop3s" option made no difference, only unticking the options shown would allow the two to work together.

    PPS Edit 2: I found this: http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?p=47326

I saw this thread but it didn't help, the "Tools" > "Options" > "Security" > "Anti-Virus" > "Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages" was checked from the time I installed Eudora OSE.

As I said earlier, I had to disable the ESET antispam protection, I tried to enable again, as soon as I click to get new messages Eudora OSE crashes. I then tried to change some of the antispam settings but that made no difference, not that I thought it would , just a try. So I definitively can't enable antispam protection.

I then tried Jim's setting modifications. I also found out that disabling POP3 protocol checking doesn't solve the problem, but disabling Email to scan for received and read mail does solve it. I left Sent mail checked and was able to send mails.

Thank you for reporting the issue. We'll try to reproduce it on our end and make a fix if we confirm it to be a problem with integration due to the Thunderbird's engine that Eudora is now based on.
