I've been watching the thread. Not much for me to add, really. Other members here have provided informative links. MS will try to put a new face on their latest OS and separate it from Win 8 in a superficial sense. They also need to entice enterprise customers.

Fair enough Osaban. I can't argue with that. I believe that there is still a large chunk of the market that does use the desktop though, for example, the corporate/business market, and perhaps a good part of the home market. I am more old school, and prefer the old fashioned desktop still. I have a laptop here also that I use as a desktop. I don't know if I could get used to just a tablet. There is also a large chunk of the market who needs the old desktop. For example, I can't really see anyone using a tablet or mobile/touch device for serious Photoshop work, or large Excel spreadsheets in business.

When MS took off down this one size fits all road, I really believed it was a mistake. Many also feel they have abandoned the traditional home user with Win 8 (and probably 9). So again, to my mind, MS would have pleased literally everyone, if they had done a separate mobile and desktop OS's. Win 7 was a fantastic OS IMO. I loved it. But I think they goofed when they tried to combine the 2 UI's into one product. I know, many disagree. That's just my take on it. It's fine to just agree to disagree.

USA still the best. But barely.
Why couldn't there be an option as an installation choice. Or a remove all Tablets features like on Windows 7.

No problem Kerodo... And Win7 IS a fantastic OS, it seems to be a unanimous opinion. When I bought my last machine in May 2013 I would have been equally happy to have Win7 or Win8, although I must admit I like new things even if they are more likely to have glitches and bugs...

They are hardly abandoned. Apart from looking at Metro for 1 or 2 minutes a month they can use Win8 just as they have used Win7. Is using Metro for that brief period so bad?

I just don't think it belongs on a non-touch machine, period. Why settle for less?

You can try to sell it all you want, but most people aren't buying it. Nice try though... :)

Don't need to sell or boycott it, Metro is what it is and I highly doubt anyone actually can't work with or without it. As for Windows 9, I'll try it or the Server version in a virtual machine once released.

Sure, I actually used Win 8 and 8.1 Previews for several months, and I could live with it if I had to. I just choose not to. But true, it won't kill anybody to use it.

I plan to run Win9 from my HD0 SSD as the SSD has plenty of space available. Win9 will be installed as an independent OS (not a Microsoft multi-boot) and won't see my other operating systems and data partitions. Looks like a beta will be available in a month or two.

If there is a beta or preview available, I will install and run it and see how it looks...

Is this new "preview release soon!" announcement the correct one? Sorry for being sceptical, I've seen this kind of release announcement like almost every month. =V

I will wait and see how you people will say about 9. d=w=

I will install beta in Virtualbox and place it on SSD. I hope that they have learned from mistakes they've made with Windows 8.

Based on a little Googling, it appears that there will be a preview release in September this year... certainly worth a look.

Yeah, well, too many "preview release soon!" announcement already there are and none of them correct. I'm kind of bored waiting.

I don't get it, windows 7 is a big success, why don't they just keep that as their flagship OS and support it with service packs etc?

I did warn the windows 8 fans, that MS would dump that OS if it failed commercially, they seem a bit lost now, changing decisions almost annually, not sticking to a path.

To be fair Microsoft did need to create a better UI for touchscreen computing. They just didn't need to alienate a large portion of the desktop customer base to get the job done. Threshold does appear to strike a better balance - we'll know when the Technology Preview is released. As for ongoing support for "7" with service packs, etc, that would have been fine technically IMHO, but I expect they would have wanted to monetize it.

OK, ermm .... does that mean I shouldn't hold out for Win 8.2 if I want to buy a new laptop?

Ok, yeah, I guess we'll know what's what when it finally actually does come out... :)
