As others pointed out, this thread can be very useful when you are trying to find some software alternative. It's also always interesting to read what other "computer aficionados" use.

    That's what I think. :)

I agree. For those who think this thread is a waste of time, why do you bother reading it (and posting)?:D

Personally I think threads devoted to a named software or threads asking for which software to use for a specific task are the ones that are useful.

I don't mind occassionaly seeing a 'list' of software titles being used by people, but I don't really know what to do with it. I am not going to go out and research or test 99.99% of them until I actually have a need.

Wherein lies the strength of a more specific thread. If I am searching for whether I should use Adobe or an alternative, there are many threads devoted to that. I can get pertinent infos on that topic. Or maybe I want to know about some recommended softwares to handle my music files, again a more specific thread with infos I want.

No offense, but I think you are better off to create some finer granularity rather than lumping everything into one.

    Good luck though.

    Sul.

    all mine software is freeware

    Antivirus: MSE x64
    Archives: 7-zip x64
Browser: Google Chrome (preparing to control OS via a browser till Chrome OS will hit us in 2015)
Browser adblock: ADblock, Flashblock, OpenDNS (espcially porno and AD webpages, also blocks downloading from them)
Browser addons: AntiWeather (animated weather icon), GMail checker, Flags (shows flag, IP of a webpage along with links to Whois, McAfee Advisor, etc).
DVD movies backup: DVDFab (to backup DVD on HDD in iso removing all junk like ADs and menu)
    Encryption: AxCrypt x64
    Firewall: Windows Firewall x64
Games: XFire (ingame chat, video recording, sound chat)
    Images: XnView (also image capturing)
Instant Messaging: GTalk (sound chat, also email notification)
    Password Management: KeePass
PC maintenance: Cleaner (every Windows needs it), Defraggler, HijackThis, Quicksys RegDefrag, Revo Uninstaller, SIW (all info about PC)
PDF Management: PDF-XChange Viewer x64 (faster then Adobe and has working features unlike Foxit)
Media Tools: Daemon Tools Lite x64 (virtual DVD ROM), ImgBurn (to burn everything)
Media Player: Media Player Classic Home Cinema x64 (no codecs needed, I use it to play DTS, which WMP can not and VLC could not play some orig DVDs)
    Office Suite: OpenOffice
    Torrent: uTorrent
    Update Management: Softpedia's email notification
If everyone would hold on to some apps specification (like PDF or PC maintenance, not just apps list), then it would do just that, otherwise it will be messy. ;)

    @ TOMxEU

I liked the way you posted your software so much that I'll copy your text formatting on my list. I noticed that you use XnView for dealing witih images. I'm curious, is it better than my options, Paint.net and PhotoScape?

I also used SIW during long time, but uninstalled it. When I need, I may reinstall it or install the new Piriform Speccy, which seems promissory.

Thanks. I use XnView just to view images. I like SIW, it is like CPU-Z, GPU-Z, HW Monitor and others all in one, all info about hardware, system, network.
