No, it's actually a significant improvement to our core protection (not just marketing-speak :))

Ah sorry  .Then I must have misunderstood the answer I got 2 or 3 years ago, we were joking in a thread when I asked if you were an "English lad", the answer was Yes...but I don't remember the whole conversation. It was when Prevx was still on it's own and the HQ was in Derby. But it doesn't matter, but now things are more clear :D :thumb:

Am intrigued by the "Detect Potentially Unwanted Applications" setting, that is unchecked by default under 'Advanced Settings/Scan Settings'?

I do not remember it being available in the 2013 version and was wondering as to the thinking/functionality behind it, and why it is unchecked as per default.

Just getting curious in my old age...:D

    @Baldrick
Installed a fresh WSA last night. Had to set every setting. Noticed "Detect Potentially Unwanted Applications" setting already checked. If it's unchecked by default why was it checked in my WSA? Weird thing.

PUP detection.... it was active recently on the old version (I saw a lot of PUP detection on some machines I follow). Now you have the option to set it ON or OFF in WSA.

It wasn't unchecked here when I installed the beta.

It is checked by default on new installs or upgrades, partly because otherwise, our scores will be worse in AV tests where they test against PUPs...

I don't know how agressive your PUP-policy is, but won't this open you up to lawsuits from PUP/grayware companies? Emsisoft Anti-Malware has a new PUP feature and they ask the user after install/upgrade, so the user specifically has to decide whether he wants PUPs detected or not, so Emsisoft is not liable.

Btw, I forgot to compliment Webroot for having/keeping their own GUI instead of some metro clone :thumb:

    Nice Job looks excellent.

Does Webroot mix well with Bitdefender? I have seen a couple of comments here from time to time that it doesn't. Is there a known issue that this combo is more prone to cause issues than with other AV products or were these just a couple of stray isolated anecdotal incidents??

I found that WSA 2012-2013 does not go well with Bitdefender. Mainly because of the Identity Shield. Bitdefender's Web Filtering interferes with ID-shield and caused freezes of the browser. Bitdefender is infamous for its incompatibility with other security solutions.

I have not tried WSA 2014 with Bitdefender and I probably won't. Try it for yourself when WSA 2014 is released in a week or so. Good luck!

@all who replied to my question...thanks (was away from the PC yesterday and so am just catching up) :D

    Hi Joe

Understand where you are coming from re, the default setting...even though I do not understand why mine was not set o_O (I really wish some of those testing orgs would understand what WSA is about/how it works...:cautious: ).

Will give the functionality a run in my testing before deciding where to leave on or off...but I gather from you reply (perhaps incorrectly) that it would be 'off' if it was not for the aforementioned reason?

    Regards, Balders

As someone else has suggested, perhaps WSA should ask the user upon install if they want PUPs detected. The same pop-up would then be presented to testing organisations when they install the product for testing.

I don't know if this is feasible or not, but it is an area to be considered as the files in question are only "potentially" unwanted so it is open to debate, and there are programs out there considered to be greyware.

Asking the user for more options during install (such as a box for PUP detection) is against the idea of WSA being so simple to install. You only have to enter a license key now and WSA will adjust itself to the system automatically.

I am not sure how the devs behind WSA will react if there's a threat for lawsuits from these companies that provide the PUPs/graywares.

I believe that offering the option is sufficient for preventing legal issues, but I'll have our guys take a look to see if there is any potential problem here.

    Thanks!
