Microsoft is to lend its expertise to the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC’s) Cyber Accelerator programme as it seeks its next cohort of startups working to “make the UK the safest place to live and work online”.

The seventh group of new companies to move through the two-month Accelerator programme, which supports the development of products, skills, jobs and business growth, will focus on smart cities and the security risks associated with them.

“The UK has a long history of innovation in cyber security with its roots in the ground-breaking work done at Bletchley Park,” said Chris Perkins, Microsoft general manager of UK public sector. “But the level of threat we face today is significant and growing.

The 10-week NCSC programme will begin in January 2021 and run through to March, with selected startups to be chosen through an open competition comprising a series of technical challenges run by the NCSC, designed to root out areas of cyber security weakness where there could be a niche for a new product.

Microsoft: The NCSC and Microsoft are looking for cybersecurity companies to help protect the UK

Microsoft is partnering with the Government’s National Cyber Security Centre’s Cyber Accelerator programme, to find and develop start-ups that can make the UK the safest place to live and work online.

It comes as the NCSC warns of rising cybersecurity threats in the UK. The NCSC recently announced that in the past year it has dealt with 723 cybersecurity incidents involving nearly 1,200 victims. These are the highest totals since the NCSC was formed in 2016, having risen 10% and 33% respectively on the previous 12 months.

Cyber Accelerator

Developing the UK’s cyber security ecosystem through accelerating innovative start-ups
The Accelerator supports the growth of start-up cyber companies who aim to bring new ‘better, faster and cheaper’ security products to market. It aims to support the emerging cyber security industry within the UK, encouraging skills, jobs and growth.
Those participating receive commercial growth opportunities as well as mentoring and advice from the NCSC itself.

Five UK startups have been selected to work with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to address the most serious national cyber security threats facing the UK.

The NCSC for Startups initiative is a joint venture with London-based innovation centre Plexal, supported by Deloitte, CyNam, Cheltenham-based co-working space Hub8, and tech skills provider QA.

The programme is the successor to the NCSC's Cyber Accelerator programme, which helped more than 40 tech companies raise over £100 million of investment.

The five companies - PORGiESOFT, Exalens, Enclave, Meterian, and Rebellion Defence - will receive direct support from Plexal's cyber innovation team as well as leading experts from the NCSC and GCHQ. They will also gain access to wider technical and commercial opportunities with Plexal's industry partners across the UK's cyber security ecosystem. However, each startup will keep all intellectual property and equity created during the programme.

The NCSC programme is similar to the LORCA initiative run by Plexal, in that more startups will be selected in the coming months. These will be early-stage businesses at "all stages of maturity", according to Plexal.

"The response to our call for applications has been phenomenal and we're looking forward to bringing on more startups throughout 2021 in response to specific challenges and technology needs in the cybersecurity market," said Saj Huq, director of Innovation at Plexal.
