Chip designer ARM has suspended business with Huawei, threatening the Chinese company’s ability to create its own chips. BBC News reports that ARM employees have been instructed to halt “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” with Huawei due to the US trade ban.

ARM is concerned it is affected by the US ban, with an internal memo reportedly revealing that its chip designs include “US origin technology.”
“ARM is complying with all of the latest regulations set forth by the US government,” says an ARM spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. The company is not commenting any further about its decision. We’ve also reached out to Huawei to comment.

It’s not clear whether ARM is simply reacting cautiously to the US Commerce Department order, or whether it has been advised to halt business with Huawei directly. If it’s the latter then ARM’s decision could be mirrored by other semiconductor companies that also supply Huawei.

Huawei is having a horrible week, and it’s only Wednesday. Last Thursday, the Trump Administration placed the Chinese technology conglomerate on an Entity List, preventing US companies from doing business with it. And now we’re seeing Europe-based companies flee from Huawei, perhaps in an effort to avoid running afoul of the American authorities.

Although the US embargo on Huawei has been suspended temporarily for 90 days, the BBC states that ARM staffers haven’t been told they can resume collaborating with Huawei.
Long term, we could see ARM lose its monopoly to an insurgent Asian rival.

He added: “In the UK and Europe, we must maintain a proper sense of perspective and not allow ourselves to be dragged into President Trump’s attempt to build an economic and technological iron curtain around China. Is it me or is Mandelson actually talking some sense about this 'controversy'?

Also the French president, Emmanuel Macron, commented on the issue on Thursday, saying his country was not aiming for a company boycott. He said “Our perspective is not to block Huawei or any company, it is to preserve our national security and European sovereignty. But I think launching now a technological war or a trade war … is not appropriate,”

And even Macron is doing the same. Without definitive proof that Huawei is a threat to national security I think the individual motives of those who claim any form of potential espionage should be examined. China is the future.

I said it from the start of this conspiracy boycott of Huawei, US worrying to lose supremacy over China. US lifeboat is that the economic world uses US dollars.

American 5G companies are so late on it, now they need their government to hamper rivals like Huawei to catch up.

Remind me the fabricated "discovery" of Irakian bioweapon cache, just to wage war to "access" Irak's oil reserves.

Guess what? when they will catch up and get contracts , they will be no more Huawei "backdoors"... Like there weren't any bioweapon cache...

Things just keep getting worse for Huawei. The company was barred from being a member of the SD Association, the trade group responsible for standardizing SD and microSD cards. The change in status means that Huawei will no longer be able to offer official SD or microSD support in its devices, including phones and laptops.

Huawei told Android Authority that its customers will be able to continue purchasing and using SD and microSD cards with its products for the time being. It's not clear how the move will affect the company's future phones and devices, but Huawei has been moving away from the format in favor of its own "Nano Memory Cards."
Being dropped by the SD Association is certainly a blow to Huawei, but it's a relatively small one given some of the other hits the company has taken in the last week.

The U.S-China trade war is increasingly influencing tech. Huawei has suffered a turbulent past week with key suppliers pausing work with the company, and now China’s largest chipmaker is planning to delist from the New York Stock Exchange.
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) announced in a filing published Friday that it plans to delist next month ending a 15-year spell as a public company in the U.S. The firm will file a Form 25 to delist on June 3, which is likely to see it leave the NYSE around ten days later.

“SMIC has been considering this migration for a long time and it has nothing to do with the trade war and Huawei incident. The migration requires a long preparation and timing has coincided with the current trade rhetoric, which may lead to misconceptions,” a spokesperson told CNBC.

Still, it is impossible to ignore the current context.

Huawei's rapidly escalating fight with the US has taken a rather unusual direction. The company has accused FedEx of diverting two of its packages meant for China, and trying to reroute two other packages sent from Vietnam to other Asian offices. Both of the diverted packages went to the US, Huawei told Reuters, and reportedly contained "no technology" -- just commercial documents.

Huawei was angry, at any rate. A spokesman said the alleged diversions "undermines [Huawei's] confidence," and that the company would "have to review" its logistics requirements as a result. It had already filed a complaint with China's postal regulator.
A FedEx spokeswoman said the packages were diverted "in error," and denied that the US government or anyone else had asked to send them somewhere else.

“This decision threatens to harm our customers in over 170 countries, including more than 3 billion customers who use Huawei products and services around the world,” Song said.
Song said the “state-sanctioned campaign” against the company will not improve cybersecurity.

“Politicians in the U.S. are using the strength of an entire nation to come after a private company,” he said. “This is not normal.”

The US' effective ban on Huawei might have serious consequences for the scientific community. One of the largest science publishers, IEEE, has banned Huawei scientists from reviewing papers so long as the trade restrictions are in place.
There are "severe legal implications" from allowing the Chinese company's staff to look at technical research, IEEE told editors of its roughly 200 journals.

This makes it harder for scientists to advance discoveries in areas where Huawei is a specialist, such as AI. It could also deter Huawei from submitting papers if the company sees the IEEE as hostile to its work.
As it stands, this is only likely to put Huawei further on edge.
There's not much it can do to return to the IEEE's good graces unless the US changes its mind, though, so it may have to live with the consequences unless the US changes its mind.

Why Australia keep using Huawei 4G infrastructures? if it is such a menace, i would remove all Huawei equipments.

Huawei has previously faced difficulties in getting business with its undersea cable division.

In March 2019, the Wall Street Journal cited US security officials as saying that undersea cables built by Huawei could be vulnerable to espionage by the Chinese state, an accusation that the company denied.
