HSBC on Saturday denied Chinese media reports that it had “framed” Huawei Technologies and played a role in the arrest of the chief financial officer (CFO) of the world’s biggest telecoms equipment maker.

In a statement posted on the bank’s Chinese WeChat messaging service account, the London-headquartered lender said it did not participate in the decision of the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Huawei.
The HSBC statement comes a day after China’s official People’s Daily newspaper published a report accusing HSBC of being an accomplice of the United States and lying about Huawei, resulting in the arrest of its CFO Meng Wanzhou.

The three companies who dominate Portugal’s mobile phone market said they would not use Huawei [HWT.UL] technology in their core 5G networks despite the government not banning the Chinese group from supplying critical infrastructure.

NOS (NOS.LS), Vodafone (VOD.L) and Altice (ATCA.AS) - which together serve nearly 100% of Portugal’s mobile customers - all said they had decided not to use Huawei kit in the core systems of their 5G networks, which covers servers, gateways and routers that forward traffic to the antennas.
The question of whether or not to use Huawei for next-generation mobile networks has become a major issue in Europe amid intense diplomatic pressure from the United States to ban the Chinese group.

Altice Portugal CEO Alexandre Fonseca set out a similar stance as early as March, saying the company hadn’t even included Huawei in its current core mobile telecoms networks.
Neither company gave a reason for not using Huawei in their core networks.

Nuno Santos confirmed he had “heard Huawei would be left out” of core 5G networks but added: “It has nothing to do with the options or impositions of the Portuguese government, which in this matter is absolutely aligned with the European orientation.”

In a response to comments made by Turnbull on the ABC's Four Corners program on Monday night, a Huawei Australian spokesperson said it was on the public record — in the shape of a report in the Australian Financial Review on 24 February — that Turnbull was briefed by the US National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security about their concerns over Huawei being involved in Australia's 5G rollout.

The spokesperson quoted Turnbull as having told Four Corners: "The 5G issue was raised by me with the Americans and that assertion by Huawei is utterly false. It was raised by me when I was in discussions with the administration and it was something that we made a point about, it was a matter of very keen interest to us. I want to say that the proposition that we were directed or advised by the Americans to keep Huawei out of our network by the US is simply not true."
"We can say with absolute certainty that Huawei Australia was completely unaware of any concerns around our involvement in 5G from the Australian Government until the Australian Financial Review article was published on 24 February."

A Huawei executive’s recent suggestion that the Huawei Mate 40 series will quite likely be the last of the company’s phones to feature its in-house Kirin silicon was both shocking and inevitable.

With US trade sanctions against the Chinese giant now extending as far as foreign chipmakers that use or license and US technology, this prevents TSMC or Samsung from manufacturing chips for Huawei. Without a manufacturing partner, Huawei’s Kirin is no more. Simple as that.
Of course, this would also have a knock-on effect Huawei’s routers, switches, and other bits of hardware that all use Kirin silicon.

Alternatively, Huawei is still allowed to procure chips from rival designers, providing they aren’t US-based. Qualcomm is obviously out of the question and Samsung doesn’t have a track record of selling large numbers of Exynos chips to outsiders. This leaves MediaTek.

There’s little doubt that without Kirin, Huawei’s ability to adapt and withstand the pressures of the US trade embargo is further diminished. Silicon cuts right to the core of Huawei’s smartphone business and its future now seems to rest firmly on who, if anyone, it can find to work with to get around this latest roadblock.

Qualcomm warns lawmakers that Huawei will turn to chip manufacturers that aren't based in the US unless changes are made to the export licensing policies.

The decision is awaiting approval from the Indian Prime Minister's office and is set to be announced within one to two weeks.

Last year, the Trump administration placed Huawei and its subsidiaries on the U.S. Commerce Department’s “Entity List,” which blocked Google from licensing Google Mobile Services for new Huawei device models made available after May 16, 2019.

However, Huawei’s temporary general license has expired as of last night. It isn’t immediately clear what this means for software updates on existing Huawei mobile devices with Google apps, but this could spell trouble for the company.
According to The Washington Post, the Commerce Department could still renew the temporary general license, but neither the agency nor Huawei responded to a request for comment from the publication.

What isn’t clear, though, is how exactly the license expiration will affect future software updates. What will most likely happen is that Huawei devices that already have Google apps will continue to have them, however, Huawei won’t receive support from Google if any changes they make to their builds break compatibility with Google apps. Thus, Huawei will have to tread lightly with pushing software updates if the TGL is not renewed.

Meng, 48, was arrested in December 2018 on a warrant from the United States which alleges that she misled the bank HSBC about Huawei’s business dealings in Iran.
She has said she is innocent and is fighting extradition while on house arrest in Vancouver.

A Canadian court blocked the release of more documents related to the arrest of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, court documents released on Tuesday said.

Meng was arrested by Canadian police on December 1, 2018, at Vancouver International Airport. The U.S. is accusing her of fraud linked to the alleged violation of U.S. sanctions against Iran and wants her to face trial in New York. Both Meng and Huawei have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
Lawyers for the Canadian attorney general declined to release all of the documents, claiming that some would "threaten national security if disclosed."

"The information does not provide the 'missing pieces of the puzzle' that Meng seeks," Judge Catherine Kane wrote in her ruling issued on August 21 but only made public Tuesday.

Following the trade ban imposed on Huawei last year, the U.S. government granted the company a temporary general license (TGL) to conduct limited business with U.S. companies. The license was extended several times over the last year, but the last extension expired earlier this month and it wasn’t renewed further.

According to a recent report from Reuters, MediaTek has submitted an application to the U.S. government for permission to continue its business with Huawei after the new U.S. regulations take effect on September 15th. In a statement to the publication, the company said,

“MediaTek reiterates its respect for following relevant orders and rules on global trade, and has already applied for permission with the U.S. side in accordance with the rules.”
Analysts claim that MediaTek could be among the worst affected by the latest restrictions.

French Operator Bouygues Confirms Huawei Antenna Removal

One of France’s largest mobile operators, Bouygues Telecom, has reportedly confirmed it will remove 3,000 Huawei mobile antennas by 2028.

The decision comes after French authorities in July this year told local operators they would not be able to renew licences for the 5G gear in highly-populated areas, once they expire. This effectively amounts to a de facto ban on the Chinese kit by 2028.
Now Bouygues’s deputy CEO was quoted by Reuters as saying on Thursday that the operator will replace 3,000 Huawei-made mobile antennas in France by 2028.

“A number of sites will gradually have to be dismantled,” Bouygues’s deputy chief executive Olivier Roussat told reporters on a call, adding there were 3,000 sites with Huawei equipment.

The US Federal Communications Commission said on Friday that it would cost $1.837 billion to replace Huawei and ZTE networking equipment from more than 50 rural telecommunications networks.
The FCC formally designated Huawei and ZTE as national security threats back in June.

However, the cost and logistics of implementing such a ban has been the looming challenge for the FCC. Friday's announcement makes clear that removing and replacing networking gear that's currently in use will cost telecoms a lot of money. Now, FCC chairman Ajit Pai is asking Congress to appropriate federal funds to reimburse rural carriers.

"I once again strongly urge Congress to appropriate funding to reimburse carriers for replacing any equipment or services determined to be a national security threat so that we can protect our networks and the myriad parts of our economy and society that rely upon them."

There was initially some confusion from Samsung and SK Hynix on whether the May sanctions affected their ability to supply memory to Huawei, two people familiar with the matter said. The August announcement, however, made it clear that Samsung and SK Hynix's memory supply would be banned as part of the sanctions.
At the moment, it seems highly unlikely that the US will give the South Korean companies license to supply to Huawei, they added, with the pair very much expecting for supplies to halt from September 15.

“Many multinational semiconductor manufacturers including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix made requests for an approval from the US Department of Commerce.” said one high-ranking official from the South Korean government (via ETNews).
Separately, we’ve heard that Samsung Display will also be applying for a license to continue trading with Huawei after next week. LG Display, however, reportedly does not intend to seek approval, at least not in the short term.
