The formula for the perfect Linux desktop

    Well it must be "the perfect linux desktop" for many? Ubuntu I mean.

    Yes, there is no such thing as a "perfect" anything let alone a Linux Desktop! Part of its charm is that it is user definable (to some extent) to adapt to user needs.

    And, since Linux refers to the kernel vs a "polished" Apple Mac OSx - it is not the Linux kernel that needs polishing - it is the OS environment around it that needs polishing to compete with the "polished" Mac OSx!

    Not gonna happen - i.e. Apple's software was designed in an object oriented fashion - very nice design indeed! To make the same happen in the Linux world would take - uh, that ship has sailed!

    I think we need a few standards:

    • One package format
    • One audio server
    • One display server
    • De-centralized libraries, programs install their own little runtime like they do on Windows
