In brief: In what can be filed under the category of news that will surprise absolutely nobody, Atari’s upcoming VCS won’t make it out to early Indiegogo backers by the end of the year as originally promised. The good news is that we're talking about a delay of only a few weeks and according to Atari brass, backers should still get their units before the general public.

In a recent Medium post on the matter, Atari Chief Operating Officer Michael Arzt said that given the work that still needs to be done like final stage certification and testing, they realized they needed a few more weeks than originally anticipated. A revised, firm launch date wasn’t provided although Arzt said they “are talking weeks here, not months” and that the Indiegogo backers remain their top priority.

Either way, Arzt said, Indiegogo backers will receive their Atari VCS systems before the general public gets theirs in March 2020. And as a bonus, he said Atari will try to come up with some kind of bonus to reward early backers for their patience.
Interested parties can pre-order the VCS directly from Atari. A bundle including the console, a gamepad and a joystick will set you back $389.99.

The chief architect of the Atari VCS — the crowdfunded Linux gaming PC whose launch has been delayed repeatedly — has sued the company, saying he was not paid for six months of work in designing the console.

Rob Wyatt, who was also the system architect of the first Xbox, says he is owed more than $260,000 by Atari Gamebox, the company behind the Atari VCS. Wyatt quit the company in October over the unpaid salary. Wyatt’s lawsuit, filed in federal court in Colorado, says that when he demanded full payment in October, Atari claimed that he had delayed the console and hadn’t performed his work on the schedule they agreed upon.

“In fact, it was Atari’s own mismanagement of the Console Project that was the cause of or reason for the delayed launch of the console Project,” the lawsuit says, “and not because Tin Giant [Wyatt’s personal corporation] had failed to perform the Agreement.”

Polygon has reached out to Atari representatives for additional comment. VentureBeat, which reported the lawsuit on Thursday, said Chesnais declined to comment, saying he hadn’t gotten a copy of the lawsuit yet.

Most recently, on March 20, the company said it had enough parts to manufacture its first 500 Atari VCS units, and that it was working hard with its Chinese factory and supply chain to expand production to fulfill Indiegogo pre-orders.
The Atari VCS, despite its name, is not a throwback mini-console; it’s a Linux gaming PC, with a high-end AMD processor, 4GB of RAM, plus 4K and HDR support, and it sells for $249.99.

Atari’s repeatedly delayed VCS console is nearly ready two years after its announcement. The team has revealed that the first 500 (or so) Atari VCS production models should leave the factory by mid-June. That will still leave the majority of Atari’s 11,597 crowdfunding backers waiting, but the team “cautiously” expects that production for those will get underway this summer now that the parts are available.

Whether or not the VCS succeeds is another matter. It’s a relatively powerful device for the money with an embedded Ryzen chip and some PC-like functionality, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be the nostalgia-inducing console of your dreams, particularly if the Atari 2600 doesn’t mean much to you.

After a long and arduous journey featuring multiple delays and other issues, Atari finally announced a release window of fall 2020 for the VCS last month. An exact release is still missing from the picture, however, the upcoming gaming system's website states that orders in the U.S. will be delivered before December 24, 2020.
Today's updates contained in a press release shed more light on the matter, stating that the Atari VSC will launch in Australia and New Zealand in November 2020.

Atari is currently shipping out the very first VCS consoles to those who backed the system on indiegogo, and when those backers get their units, it’ll come packing a surprise: Google Chrome.

Atari announced today that Chrome is the official built-in browser of the VCS. While it’s somewhat rare to see consoles supporting a third-party browser like Chrome natively, it makes sense for the VCS as Atari envisions it as a console/PC hybrid.
Obviously, no PC is complete without a dedicated web browser, so the Chrome announcement certainly fits.

For starters, it allows easy access to streaming services, and users will be able to download bookmarks for “dozens of popular streaming services” from the VCS storefront.

While we’re not sure people will want regular access to Gmail, Docs, or their Google Calendar while they’re playing video games, the VCS is capable of using all of Google’s webapps, it seems. You can even use Google Meet with the Atari VCS, and since the console supports “most PC peripherals,” you can even connect a webcam to it so people can see you in these Meet calls.

Atari said today that it’s currently in the process of shipping out the first 10,000 VCS consoles to indiegogo backers, with wider retail availability slated for early 2021.
