Microsoft made substantial headway in its goal to morph from the Windows company to a cloud company over the past decade

Microsoft didn't magically become a leading cloud company during the 2010s. But this past decade has been marked by Microsoft's launch of loads of new cloud/subscription services and increased visibility of its cloud-centric strategy across its entire portfolio.

As the 2010s come to a close, Microsoft is ensconced as the No. 2 enterprise cloud vendor by most analysts' estimates, and is winning $10 million-plus customer contracts for Azure.
Microsoft grew its cloud footprint substantially worldwide, currently claiming 55 regions worldwide (which includes some new regions that are not yet operational).

Microsoft's Azure operating system, codenamed "Red Dog," was designed by a team of Microsoft OS experts including Dave Cutler, the father of VMS and Windows NT starting in latter half of the 2000s. Azure launched in February 2010 and has become the foundation of the "new" Microsoft over the past decade.

In 2008, I had a chance to interview the Azure founding-team members. This month, in working on my look back at Microsoft's 2010s, I discovered that three of those original team members were still at Microsoft. Two of the three agreed to answer a few questions and reflect back on lessons they've learned over the past decade.

Since he took over as Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella has shifted the company's focus past Windows' billion users and toward a cloud-connected future.
This is evident in the company's surging year-over-year growth with each successive quarter, a significant portion of which is because of its cloud success. Now, Nadella has offered some insight into how he sees Microsoft's cloud business, and why it's become such a point of focus for the company.

At a media event last week, reported by The Verge, Nadella laid out the case for Microsoft's cloud future.

"The way I look at it is Windows is the billion user install base of ours. We continue to add a couple of hundred million PCs every year, and we want to serve that in a super good way," Nadella said.
The sphere of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is rapidly growing, and Azure offers Microsoft an opportunity to take part in that growth. Looking at Windows, Nadella explained he's even started to view it as an extension of Azure.

The push for cloud dominance has left some Microsoft watchers fearful that Microsoft is somehow giving up its bread and butter: Windows. However, Nadella continued to point out that Microsoft's emphasis on the cloud as its "next big thing" doesn't mean it's sacrificing other platforms.

Microsoft-owned Minecraft will stop using Amazon’s cloud
Many Microsoft applications already use the company’s Azure cloud

Microsoft will stop relying on Amazon to help it run the popular Minecraft video game.

The shift represents an obvious way for Microsoft to cut back on payments to one of its toughest competitors and promote its own product.
Amazon Web Services rules the market for public cloud infrastructure for running software from afar through vast data centers, and Microsoft has been working to take share with its Azure cloud.

Azure is growing faster than many other parts of Microsoft, helping it lean less on longstanding properties like Windows and Office.

Minecraft has since grown into the world’s best-selling game, with over 200 million copies sold as of May, and 126 million people play it each month.

“Mojang Studios has used AWS in the past, but we’ve been migrating all cloud services to Azure over the last few years,” a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC in an email. Amazon declined to comment.
Now there is an end in sight for the dependence on a rival.
“We’ll be fully transitioned to Azure by the end of the year,” the Microsoft spokesperson wrote.
